Hi All and greetings from the UK!
Apologies if this has been asked before.
Having been windsurfing for 12 years, I learnt loads from land sailing on the local football pitch using a modified mountain board and 5m windsurf sail.
Would a hand held wing work well with a mountain board on grass recreation ground as a way of learning wing use?
I would imagine that it would take a lot of wind to overcome the resistance when using a mountain board on grass given that wings are ideally used with foils.
I'm hesitating on making any investment just yet on the full wing foil set up so might do it in stages by just buying a wing to start with.
Your thoughts will be appreciated![]()
Cheers all.

Yes.. it's a great way to learn to use the wing.
It does take a lot of wind to get a land board going on grass . Harder grass and more Tyre pressure the better.
Works better on hard ,low tide sand. Tennis courts would be good, hard on the body I would expect

Winging on asphalt with a skateboard is pretty easy and good fun, helmet, gloves and knee/elbow pads are a good idea od course.
A small(4 or 5m) wing,a longboard with 70mm wheels and 10knots max will do the job fine on a decent surface.
Do not go too fast at first, wheels have very low resistance on a smooth surface, depower as needed and practice transitions a million times.
Do not expect miracles though, it helps but it will not translate into success in the water just like that. The foil is way more sensitive to weight shifts than a skateboard. The critical fore/aft foil balancing act is non existent on wheels.
But very good for wing handling, carving etc.
Thanks all for your replies, much appreciated.
I don't expect miracles, just to learn some wing handling as I know how frustrating learning windsurfing was in the beginning.
Most car parks locally to me are too affected by wind shadow from buildings so grass pitches are a good choice.
Learning the foiling part will be another challenge....
Cheers and keep well.
