I understand front foils,
But I'm not sure I understand tails,
If I have a ha front foil eg 2140(thinking of buying) and I have a 450 tail instead of the recommended tail.
Will a mug like me notice any difference.

Very generally speaking:
-Bigger surface tail,more down angle,longer fuse = more stable foil (in pitch), slower, less turny (in my experience they give a kind of fixed radius turn).
Easier to get up on foil, more front foot pressure as you go faster.
Easier pump but with less glide.
-Tails with winglets, curved or V shaped (viewed from front) = more directional stability (yaw).They act like a rudder.Flat tails feel "looser".
If you are a beginner i would go with the standard tail for that front wing,and play with shim angles (towards less downforce).
When it begins to feel too "locked in" try smaller size,or chop the one you have.
I got a my second stabilizer last autumn and was surprised about how much it affected the handling, so it's definitely not a small change. Especially with the low price of stabs, it's a good idea to have a few of them around. Gong has a nice video where they describe the way different front wings and stabilizers work together. The same idea works with other brands as well.
I and few others have mucked around with many tails and shims etc and they vastly change the performance of the same front foil. Infact I am now of the opinion they are just as important.
