Hi everyone! I'm 90kgs and progressing well with my wing foiling. Using a sky SUP with go foil Mailko 200 and Naish 5.3.
I need 12knts+ to get going. All good. But we get lots of days 8-12kts where I live, so what's the best way to get more horsepower... invest in a 6m or 7m wing ding, or get a high aspect go foil GL wing?
Is best bang for buck horsepower under the water, or above it?

I will be curious to hear the replies. I have a gong 7m, ozone 4m, and use a maliko 200 too. I am upgrading to an ozone 6m, which I suspect will have same power or more than the gong 7m (gen 1). The big wing buys me some flying where buddies are not able to stay on foil, but it's a pretty marginal difference....maybe 2kts benefit. When the big wing is underpowered it's hard work, doesn't go upwind nearly as efficiently.
I have some experiments with a DIY copy of GL180 wing and GL140, both of which require noticably more wind to get up than the Maliko. Same for Iwa. I am trying to figure out the balance point between ease of getting up and getting upwind versus optimal wave riding foil...that's a tough tradeoff, rob Peter to pay Paul, etc.
Large low/mid aspect foil will get you going in lighter winds, water is thicker than air. Trade off they are slower and get over done easily. Not sure toodling around at low speed in flat water is that much fun anyway. However better pumping technique, a slightly smaller (area not width) higher aspect foil and a larger (stiff air framed) wing will get you going in similar winds, but it would be faster and consequently more fun IMO.
Saying that I have a 2400 wing that is not HA which is a hoot in light winds (10 to 12 knots) with a 5m and I am 105kg.

Interesting re the gong 7m. I've used a 6m WASP and it's grunty... but I feel like I need a bigger difference that 6m from my Naish 5.3. I really like my Maliko, gets up really easy - but it defo maxes out on speed. I like my Maliko for SUP surfing in medium waves. Like you say, it's all trade offs.

Yup, agree. So would you recommend as my $1k next move... a high aspect foil wing, or stiff 6m or 7m wing?
Diminishing returns to get the last knot or two of light wind. No miracles. I'm your weight. Almost never used my 5.3m. 6m is better for my weight. That goes for any brand. Not impressed with any 7 meter wings. Too big and clumsy for one knot more low end.
If I weighed a lot more, then a 7m makes sense.
I think the foil makes a huge difference, I would try to demo a big HA wing. I think the 5.3 should get you up and going in pretty light wind.
UPDATE - I got a 7m Airush wing today. It ROCKS... so that was my next move. No more underpowered days on the water ;-)
