Hello, just wondering if I'd be wasting my time and money purchasing GL240 over the GT2200?
I'M just learning starting to come up on foil but struggling. I have NL1900 with 17 5 flip tip. I'm 70 years old and 180#.
Using it on lakes low wind 10mph.
Thanks for any input. DVU
The GL240 has a thicker profile and generates more lift than the GL2200. It will come up earlier but be a bit slower. The GT2200 requires more of a runway take off. The GL240 responds to well timed leg pumps and will come up at walking pace.
Both will be a bit easier to get up on the foil than your NL190, which is quite a small high aspect foil. Smaller high aspect wings generally need good board speed before you try to come up.
Your real problem is that you're a beginner trying to foil in not enough wind with a very advanced foil. A GL240 will reduce the foil problem but you'll still be a beginner trying to ride in too little wind. Realistically you want around 15-20mph when you're learning no matter what size foil you have. Power makes everything easier.
As to whether a big foil is a waste of money is up to you. If you're going to continue with super light wind riding then having a big foil to fall back on is very handy. My usual foil is an RS850 but I still get the GL240 out for light wind, or occasionally in strong wind with a small wing. It can be loads of fun to noodle around going super slow on a big foil.

The GL210 or GL240 are great learner foils and you can usually pick them up for a bargain these days. The GT2200 is better Foil though, but at more $$. I would also suggest getting a 20" long fixed tail. They add so much pitch stability to the GoFoil setup and really make controlling the foil much easier. Learning to wing in anything less than 15knots is hard. If you have access to a boat or ski try getting towed for a few sessions to dial in your foil setup and control.
Hey DVU great to find some more GoFoilers out here. The front foil is a major factor, though the wing foiling is a system and all the other parts are going to play a role. For a given wind situation, the size and shape of your board, the length of your mast and the size of your hand wing are going to be significant in the early stages. Despite board size being significant I really enjoyed learning with a largish hand wing 6.0m for 7-15kts and used the M200 (maliko), an older surfy wind front wing, that requires some pump technique to lift off but which is very user friendly, easy to turn, not fast and has an extremely low stall speed, plus they are cheap as chips.
The NL190 is a medium wind wing for intermediate and upwards foilers, you should find the GL240 way easier to use. You may also want to check the position of your foil mast in the foil box as this could be part of what is holding you back. Then to answer your question in one sense the GT2200 won't have much benefit over the older GL but then if the newer GT really works for you and you have way more fun then it's a good investment.
this is me in 7-8kts on the M200 but I'm 12 years younger than you![]()
