I have asked Laurie if there's a possibility of a dock start forum, seeing as there is a lot of it going on. Out of interest are there many of you keen for a dock start, wake thief type forum?
Once you get the hang it gets dull pretty quickly unless you are a real cardio type... or landlocked. I don't really see it as an end itself rather a useful way to drill pumping techniques that crossover from prone, wing, downwind etc that one will find useful to get the hang of. I do some dockstarts to warm up on the way to prone foil![]()
I am proven wrong by the thriving dockstart communities that exist

I would be interested for sure. I just purchased some flat water pumping equipment and hope to give it a go sometime in April -- go big or go home -- Sab 1750 foil (its wing span is the same as my height -- 5' 10")! ![]()

I heard on the grapevine from Laurie that he'll start the forum when you change your name to Jumpnpump

Let me know how it goes!

:) my wife said the same thing!!!!! But being a Kiter pump came first!
+1 for the forum! I would name it JumpStart to be all inclusive for Rock starts, Beach starts and even Jet ski starts.

I have seen skateboard to foil starts and recently ice skates to foil and back to ice skates.Wtf?.
These people make it look so easy, it is very annoying really... :)
It's always good to have a safe place to chat with like minded weirdos doing strange things with funny looking equipment ![]()
Yeah forum name would need to cover pump foiling that involves jumping off something... Tricky. But maybe "pump foiling" is general enough even though it has crossovers into other foiling...??
I'm trying to learn to dock start off a ladder in flat water but only so I can one day launch from the beach or a good looking rock.
I saw the ice skates to pump foiling to ice skates clip... insane!
Very keen! this is a growing niche activity and its great to be able to share successes and (more commonly)fails together!!

Loving my sabfoil pump gear (I'm mostly on the WL1150 around N freo). looking forward to hearing how you go on the 1750- WHOPPA! Good luck!
Here's all you need to know:
DO NOT try this if you are beyond the age of 65. Don't ask me how I know. Lucky I escaped with my anatomy in place. ![]()
Yes, a dock starting forum would be great.
They say you need 200plus attempts to master it. Think I am up to 300 now and still have a way to go.
Also interested in seeing the "ice skates to pump foiling to ice skates clip", appreciate it someone can post a link.

Thanks
Great idea. In lieu of a specific forum, hope it's OK to ask a noob question here.
I efoil well, and wake and wing foil moderately well. This weekend I tried dock starting. After a few weak efforts, I gave up.
Just fully committing to the run up and the jump is difficult for me. It's so easy to imagine a poor jump followed by an out of control fall and a foil to the face.
A friend suggested skim boarding as a way to train. And I've seen people using submerged ladders as a launch (does that feel less sketchy than a dock?)
Any advice on how to train for the initial run and jump?
I just started but cheating using Foildrive, just no suitable locations anywhere near. Using the PNG1300, prop mounted high so once you're foiling the prop is well clear of the water. Seams to work well on my current 32ltr board.

If you already wing you could try the Anchorman from Cloud ix.
Get on foil with the wing, release and pump away.
A little off-topic but not by much -- using the beach as a launch site and a wing to get going.
Certainly an interesting approach to pump foiling -- I wish I was this good (maybe in my next life if I start when I'm 5 years old).
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried again today and was able to commit to the start. No successes but the failures were encouraging.
Lot's of people using giant high aspect wings for dock starting. My biggest is an Armstrong 1850HS. I'm using an 85cm mast and 60cm fuse. I weigh 92kg. Y'll think that combination could work?

That is nuts. Especially the beach start
