Looking to make a carbon boom for my 2022 slick sls wings. Primarily for a narrower grip size. I bought a 25mm od, 21 internal tube but have found the rear end fitting from my aluminium boom doesn't fit. The bit that slides inside is approx 25mm too. Is the fitting on the platinum boom different? Can i cut off the internal part of the fitting and simply glue it on the tube, or slot it so it will squeeze to fit inside?
Also, do I need to fit a grip? Heatshrink or eva foam? Plenty of hard handles are just bare carbon so maybe that would work ok?

I made a carbon boom. For the front end I made it out of pvc and glass fibre lay up. The rear was wood and epoxy coated. I used bike bar tape for the grip, worked well.
Out of curiosity, how thick are the walls on your tubing?
I've got tennis over grip but think it might absorb water.
I've seen that people have made wooden end fittings and there's a guy selling 3d print plans for 10usd.

The fitting on the platinum boom sls is different to the fitting on the silver aluminium boom. Smaller diameter. I made my own boom but bought the end pieces from duotone spares
Made in the past one from an old oval SUP padle shaft. Sanded the handle down for the front and made with epoxi an plug for the rear. Used an strip of padle grip RSPRO as grip just on the inside. worked great and was imo easier as retrofitting older parts that need required drilling etc
I have some Duotone fittings for DIY slick booms here in the US
Thank you, unfortunately I'm in the UK. I think I'll go with wooden homemade end pieces. What's the pupose of the bumps on the front piece and the vertical asymmetry at the rear? Do I need to reproduce those aspects. I notice other DIY booms haven't bothered this that.
Also, I was thinking about moving the boom away from the strut by putting it towards the 'bottom' of the front fitting. This would my hand a little more clearance when holding right at the front of the boom, as my hand rubs on the seam stitching when holding it in a relatively neutral position (I find that better than the front handle).
Grip - use boom grip lol
like most things here it's been done for eons and it's cheap as chips for windsurf booms
fishing rod heat shrink has been used by some, it's an acquired taste but very easy.
as an aside - no ally touching carbon you're just making a battery that way and it corrodes horribly. Always a good buffer of fibreglass in between and no bolt thru
Few years ago I made my own boom from kids SUP paddle shaft 22mm OD. Front piece I bought from Duotone website. Rear just plug it with some suitable plastic plug and wrap it few layers of electric tape to make it larger OD. Rest of boom wrapped in fishing rod heat shrink. Works fine.
This is a great idea-thanks for sharing!
I'm currently sailing with the 2025 Duotone Units with a boom, and I have to say, going back to my older 2023 or 2024 handle-based Units just doesn't feel the same. The difference in control, easy pumping and comfort is huge!
I'd love to convert those older wings to a boom setup. Does anyone know where I can buy carbon tubes or pipes to replace the two handles with a boom?
Thanks in advance!

eBay, Amazon
I bought mine from a fishing rod shop in the UK, fishing mad. It's 2mm wall and has some Kevlar in the laminate. Probably unnecessarily thick, heavy and strong. Looks like most people have used 1mm.
@Mark _australia is EVA boom grip cheap for you? It seems very expensive in the UK compared to the heatshrink. I was wondering about buying generic EVA 1mm sheet or strip instead but not sure what the right type is. High density?
Wellll I'm not really paying for it so had to google in Aus - yeah $25 for a WS boom arm vs $15 for heat shrink that is a lot shorter but would be just fine in your application (1000mm long)
