The wife and I are planning on spending February on a working type holiday in Hobart so I would love to hear from any Wing Dingers for advice and locations for that time of year.
What are the typical winds for February, is it worth bringing the gear down?
Will be based in Bellerive near the oval so hoping for southerlies to launch off the beach there
I see Feb is not typically windy then however not sure if there's enough for a winding somewhere around the bays
Please PM me or comment here if not giving away secret local only spots
Thanks in advance
Greg
Hi Greg
Can't help with Hobart, but if you find yourself coming to the northwest, let me know - not many of us up here, and the opportunity to get out with someone who knows what they are doing is awesome - February not such a great time. A lot of local knowledge about best spots for northwest tasmania
Hey Greg,
We had the lousiest windsurfing summer last year. But the best Wingdinging summer. Heaps of seabreezes 10-15 knots. Southerly or SE direction. Very often 12 knots max.
Nobody is into keeping secrets down here.
River has heaps of locations in a seabreeze. Bellerieve, Tranmere (eastern shore) are good when it's southerly/SW. Nutgrove, Taroona (western shore) good in Southerly or SE. The river has a lot of current at times. It also has a lot of concrete walls on the waterfront. This means you often get VERY confused swell/chop making foiling quite difficult at times. You can get some great swells forming on the river so you can hike upwind and then surf them back downwind.
There's also Cremorne Lagoon which is really good in a southerly when the tide is in. It's super sheltered water. There are a lot of weed beds which will require you use a short mast or foil when it's high tide.
In an easterly we go to Dorans Rd just west of Lauderdale. Offshore wind makes the water surface great.
If it really turns it on for a big southerly swell and some moderate southerly wind, then Cremorne front beach can be fantastic. If the points are on and there's a bit of cross/cross off wind then you can have a ball down there.
We have a local group of wingdingers who are on Whattsapp. Get on that when you get down here and you'll be able to hook up with a heap of us.
Brady, Thanks for that, I'm keen to do a trip up to the NW so will PM you beforehand
Marty,
Thanks for that, sounds like it is worth bringing the gear down
Really appreciate the info, starting to check out those places on Google maps
I will PM you when it gets closer to get onto the WhatsApp group
Cheers
Greg
As Marty Says plenty of wingingthat time of year.
I think you could of winged everyday last summer. Bellerive is a great spot to be.. 10 minutes from Lauderdale area ( watersports central) and still plenty of wing action on the river most afternoons. There are a few videos kicking around of winging at Lauderdale, Cremorne and Dorans
