Trying to work out best Ding Quiver for 12 months a year Dinging . My DT 5m Slick definitely does drag around my 90 keg frame most of the year no worries but there have been plenty of days where I needed more and some much less . I'm talking 1st preference, down winding, 2nd surfing in waves and 3rd mowing the lawn. Currently only riding a 5-6 x 105 litre uphaul board but plan to add a 4-8 strapped sinker to the fleet and start some boosting. So here's my question about Ding size, let's just keep it to size forget about brands .....yes yes I know some brands pull harder than others but let's just stick to numbers. My first preference is DW so thinking on nuclear days go 3.5 keep the 5 and go a 6 or 6.5 . Don't want to go a 7, just not interested if I need it plus can't ever see myself out in the ocean with it would never take it surf , need for lawn mowing I'll stay home and drink beer or go prone surfing or do I just go 4,5,6.
Appreciate any comments, please don't turn this into a brand , boom or handel battle and remember it's for 12 months of the year . ****ty , gusty , cold westerlies & thumping trades in a ground swell , plus cross off chop slop. Ding on.....![]()
Mate i have a 3.5 and 6m SMIK dings, i find the 6m is good from 8knts to 20knts ( 25knts if downwinding). The 3.5m comes out in solid 25knt plus days or if playing in waves in 20knts plus. i have used the 3.5m in 30plu knots with no issues
It really depends on what wind range you get in your area. If I was to only have 2 wings I would have my 5.2 and 3.5 ensis.
I use my prone Amos 4'6 40L in anything over 17knots. But on my larger Amos board 5'0 80L I can comfortably get up in 10-12 knots on the 5.2m and my 3.5 can handle 20-35knots.
I prefer to use my 5.2m when doing big boosts as you come down a lot softer. If it's lighter than 12 knots I'd prefer to prone. Over 35knots is just not fun and your holding on for deer life.
I'm 80kgs and have basically the same interests.
I have a 4/5/6 quiver, but I seem to need a 3.5/4.5/6.5 quiver ![]()

especially in winter.
4.5/5.5 would work in for me 105kg in WA. Qld at your weight 4/5.5 might do it.
5 is the goldilocks size for 90kg plus
I have 2 3 4 5 5.5 and 7 .... the only one I do not really use is the 2m. Everything else gets used. Wind range is 10knots to 40 knots.
My simple rule is when wing starts fluttering, it's time to change down.
I only use the AXIS 1300 foil.
Piros, I think you have the right idea. I have 6m, 5m, and 4m Slicks and a 3.3m Echo. I have no desire to go larger than my 6m Slick. I'm blessed with plenty of wind where I live and when I do occasionally use the 6m, it's often with my big Veloce XXL front foil. If I lived in a location that only generated light winds, or I was 15 kg heavier (I'm 78 kg) I might think differently about a larger (7m) wing.
The only other thing I'll mention is that the smaller hand wings have a very different wind range sweet spot for small changes in size. The percentage area difference might be a better way to look at it. It's the reason Duotone went from 4.0m to a 3.3m with the Echo's rather than straight down to a 3.0. I kinda wish they did the same thing with the Slicks. Going from a 5m to a 3.5m is a really big jump. The 4m catches a nice sweet spot in the mid-upper wind range and my 3.3 Echo is for my maxed-out upper end limit. I definitely like having both in the quiver. If I replace the 3.3 Echo with a Slick I'm also torn between choosing a 3.5m or 3m. I'll probably go 3.5m
Thanks some good insight above , I'm pretty settled on the 5 & 6 , would love 3.5 but as Dspace mentioned it's a big jump from the 5 , plus a slightly larger wing bit more forgiving on landings as Wicka said . So 4,5&6 is looking like it . I've got until Sept until new DT stock arrives so still time to chew on it .
My son and i share a 3,4,5 (roughly) quiver. Im only 74kg so 4,5,6 sounds right bang for water time buck at your weight. Maybe add a second hand cheaper smaller wing for those really nuking days given you wont use it as much.
I used to ride 6 meter a lot. My most used size.
But that was last year. For the last 9 months 5.2m is my biggest. The 6m never gets blown up. Literally used the 6m 3 times and hated doing it.
The change was possible because of more efficient boards and foils.

I'm your weight and went from a 4,5,6 Duotone Echo quiver to a 4.5,5.5, 6.5 Slick quiver, primarily because I used the 6m Echo almost all the time last summer and barely touched the 4 or 5. The 5.5 Slick has become my all-round wing, can get up on foil as long as I get a 12 knot gust. The 4.5 maxes out at about 25 knots, so I recently had to buy a 3.5 Slick for some of the big winter storms we've been having lately.
The 6.5 is a different beast, for a start it's bigger than it says. I compared it to a 7m Cabrinha and the Slick was larger., but at the same time its relatively flat and stiff, so it doesn't have a lot of low end grunt, it's not much more powerful than the 5.5m. On top of that it drags a wingtip easily due to its size, so it can feel a bit unwieldy, so it has limited range, basically below 14 knots.
So back to your question, for Slicks a quiver of 3.5, 5 and 6 sounds pretty good. Don't get the 6.5 or 7 unless you sail in a lot of light stuff
I-am thinking 6m, 4m 3m and changing up on front foil,I used my 4m in35 knots and thinking how long will it last till its flagged out. Starting to thinks it might be better to increases front foil and uses a smaller wing . What do other people think am I on the wrong track?

Pacey, how has the 3.5 slick been?
I'm 75kgs and have a 4 and 5.5 slick. This winter I've been finding 20+ knots and I feel maxed out on the 4. Been very tempted by a 3.5 or 3. Also drawn to adding in a Smik 4 or mantis for the 20 knot summer downwinder days. Really feel that smaller ding as possible is the way I want to go. I'm only riding axis HPS wings these days
I reckon 2 wing quiver is doable but will not always cover all bases.
I am finding a 2 wing + 2 foil wing quiver is really covering everything I want to do. I am finding I can work harder in the low end and hang on in the top end so that the wind range stretches out quite well.
I have 5m + 3.5m smik, axis 860+ 1010. Mostly on ONE 5.4" 112l wing board and was previously on ONE 6'5" 130L sup. I weigh a little over 100kg.
In Perth we tend to get a lot of 12 to 15 knot days. In these winds it usually takes a bit of effort to get going but I can reliably get a proper session on these low teens days. With the 5m I can do around 12 to 25 knots and with the 3.5m I can do around 18 to 30+. I could add a bigger or smaller wing for each end of the scale but probably wouldn't get much use.
Below 12 knots I just can't be bothered and there's not usually any waves or bumps. Above 35 knots is also too rare to warrant an extra small wing.
My 3.5m is my favorite wing to use unless I'm doing larger jumps. The smaller wing is way lighter and more manageable in the surf. It's easy to flip over when your on the wave and throw over your head when doing tacks. Every maneuver is much easier with the smaller profile wing. You just need about 17knots to get it going comfortably.
Yes my 3.5m smik is a real pleasure to use. I am really liking the bigger foil smaller wingding combo for extra glide and bump surfing ability
Pacey, how has the 3.5 slick been?
I've only sailed it a couple of times and that was in nuking, gusty conditions, so hard to get an objective opinion of it. But it felt surprisingly good for the short time I used it, more twitchy, but a lot more controllable than the 4.5 in those conditions
Some great feedback above , thanks so much . I'll probably go 3.5 , 5 & 6 . Why the 3.5 not the 4 , extra nuking DW days not planning on launching on those days so don't need a bigger wing for softer landings . The 5 still handles 20 to 25kn .
Few comments on foils above . I tend to use the same foil for prone , DW ding & surf ding . For me ATM is the Axis 890 BSC . For mowing the lawn in light wind if I only had my 5 I'll bolt a boat like the 1010.
If we ever start DW ding racing .. Well that's going to be a whole new thread on what foils I'd use . ![]()

I have a 3 , 4 and 5m2 and in light wind I use the Axis 970 BSC , much nicer than the 1010
What rear(s) do you use with the 890BSC?
New 400 & 420 but prefer 420
I run the 380 with my 890 and am super stoked on it. I can steer it dramatically with minor ankle movements. I am blown away at how slow I can ride this 1270cm foil without stalling. This has me on knee high chop just slashing the bejesus out of it. Wing tips out on turns is not a problem anymore. I love my hps wings for hauling ass and jumping but I definitely lost some of the surfability that I got back with the bsc. Thank you Adrian! You are a wizard. I am thinking about adding a crazyshort to the mix to spice it up more.
I started with only a 5.5 and it was a more than handful on nuking days for my 70 kg, small man's body. I picked up a 3.5 and what a joy it is to handle. I love the days I can use that wing. That was too big of a gap so I grabbed the matching 4.5, which I hope will become my go to wing. Summer is dire in the northeast US so it has been the 5.5 most of the time. I am looking forward to the winds of autumn for more reliable conditions. I am going to hold off wit's those 3 wings for now to get my skills refined.

What rear(s) do you use with the 890BSC?
Camarillo,
I'm 90kilos and use the 1060BSC with the 370 rear stab with a 6.4 v2 slingwing. I really enjoy the wing and am having a great time with it this summer.
The fall is right around the corner and I can see me wanting to wing in bigger winds (rather than just go to windsurfing). I'm thinking about the 890BSC or 970BSC and maybe getting a 4.0 Wing. Again, still learning, any thoughts on what should be my next set of smaller foil/wings?
DC
You will need a black fuse for the 890BSC but it is worth it .
With the 5m2 the 890 will work from about 18 knots and with the 4m2 and the 890 you will be fine up to 30 knots
