Bought a arte939V2, black short advance fuselage and ordered a 362/50 stab with it. But the stab was lost in transit, didn't want to wait longer, so instead got a 358/35 which could be delivered next day.
As i learned and progressed on a borrowed set in Bonaire my current setup in the Netherlands is totally new to me. The board is a SuperK midlength.
I am able to go quite ok currently on this setup, 4 Sessions in.
But sometimes when going upwind and leaning a lot it feels like the boards skids a bit under me. Could it be the stab or is it just me who needs to adjust/get used to a midlength?
What would a bigger stab bring me? There's seems to much choice....
I feel like pitch stability is quite ok, with the normal short fuselage I have, no problem there.
I ride the 939v2 with the Ultrashort Fuse and the Progressive 400 Stab. This combo feels so nice to me. Gets me going pretty quick. Also tried the Skinny50 but I need proper wind to get up on foil. Never tried the Skinny35 with the 939v2. But I will try soon.
I know the feeling you have when I go in the gybe and try to hook it around. WIch the Skinny50 sometimes my tails slips through where the P400 would still have traction.
sorry for my bad english ??
Axis is awesome as it has lots small steps between their rear wing sizes, but is difficult to choose which one..
If found you need to do testing to find the right size. The right one is the size bigger than the one that feels too small. And as you get better you can go smaller. Might end up with 3 rear wings. Sell what you dont use..
For me am looking for the rear wing that provides constant front foot force as you go faster. I adjust mast position so front foot has slightly more weight than rear. ( Front foot should not move on takeoff. )
If rear wing is too big learning is easy but as you go faster front foot force increases and you become speed limited. If rear wing is too small front foot force can decrease as you go faster and this does not feel good.
You can sail with too small a rear wing but in stronger winds or rougher conditions it does not provide confidence.
On a ultra short fuse for winging i use:
819 artv2 360 skinny
879 art v2 362 skinny
939 art v2 362 skinny
Spitfire 960 362 skinny or 325 progressive.
Recently started learning sup surfing on 960 found the 325 progressive so much easier to surf on.
Progressive rear wings are great for learning and low speed surfing.
I believe when using short instead of ultra short fuse you would use one size smaller rear wing.
Have fun..
I run a 362/50 skinny with my ArtV2 879, tried a friends 360/45 and realized I didn't need the lift of the 362, but I didn't like the instability of the 360, so I tried a 1 deg negative shim with the 362, thats the ticket for me !!
I run my 999 and 879 ART V2s with 360/45 and 362/50, now also have the Skinny Surf 320/48.
My fav stab is the 360/45 for both the 999 and 879. The 362/50 is good with the 999, but I prefer the speed and feel of the 360/45. I even use the 360/45 in light winds with the 999, the difference in getting up is miniscule anyway (I can hardly even feel it).
I have tried the Skinny Surf once with the 879. It was very windy, so difficult to really test it. But it clearly was more reactive with very good carving. After 30 mins or so, I felt more stable using it, but struggled with having too much power in my 4.0 wing in the 35 knot wind...
The tip about negative shim on the 362/50 is interesting, I will try that! Never used a shim. :) I would like less backfoot pressure with that stab. What kind of stab you like seems to be a bit personal, but for me the Progressive 400 is a very big stab to be using with the 939 V2 (but, this will ofc depend on weight, skill, gear used and conditions). I had the P 375 and thought it was much to big for both my V2s. I am currently considering replacing my 362/50 with a 359/40.
81 kgs, average improving wingfoiler, mainly on an Axis Blast 65 board with adv. ultra (640 mm) and crazyshort (600 mm). I normally run the crazy with my 999 V2 and the ultra with the 879.
I used to negative shim when I had a normal Short fuse with 999 and 799 with 380 speed. Then got an Advanced Ultrashort and no longer needed to tame the lift. 939 and 362 skinny were next. Realised that smaller tail wings make bugger all difference to my speed as I'm the biggest limitation, so picked up a 365 skinny and shimmed it +1. Hoping this will make tacks and foot switches a bit easier - I think it has. I was worried it would slow me down, but it hasn't. The uncomfortable truth is I lack the finesse for my gear to make a lot of difference ![]()
Currently there is a 400 flat speed for sale locally. With the double the area would it bring a bit more stability?
I run 939V2/Ad+Crazy with 362/50. At 78kg's I found too much foot pressure so did negative ~1o with clipped hotel room card. Did the trick and achieved my best speeds yet - 23mph.
I did find the V2 a hand full in turbulent sea states and wave riding. I picked up SF720, SF840 & SF960. I ran them all with set up above but with 375P. So much slower than V2 but so nice on the wave. SF850 on small ground swell was a blast. SF720 too twitchy for me so I will try with Ad+/Ultra and 325P.
My last 3 sessions were on SF960/Crazy/375P in Hurricane Erin ground swell - 7ish feet - then 2 sessions in 3' wind swell. Too much front foot pressure for me and slow. I bought 1/4" nylon washers**. Did 3 yesterday and nose dropped too much. Today went with 2 washers negative and it was very good. Next session will drop to a single washer as I believe that will work well too.
As I get more proficient in waves/swell I will look to speed up the Spit Fires - looking for suggestions.

Thanks for all the input, highly appreciated! I took a shot on the speed 400/60 on the second hand market. Did a way overpowered (4,5mtr adx in 20+knts) session but was so happy with the feeling now. The skidding feeling is gone and the board actually feels like I'm riding my snowboard in powder. Such a nice feeling.
The setup is also way faster than I'm daring at the moment. Could easily clock 35-40 kmh without leaning much or pulling for power. Need to work on the confidence to send it harder.

I think the SF 780 with a 45 skinny (or 300 prog) is the ticket for you, 780 is so good in strong winds and turbulence. Ive just got the 840 now too and that als goes great with the 45 skinny. Both on crazy short.I also have the 939 for less turbulent days and SF 960 with 45 skinny or 325 prog for light stuff.I find that I move the mast back 10mm for prog tails, they are more lifty than my 45 skinny

Thx trakkar.
I set up my SF720 with the Ultra and 325P. Just waiting on a windy day to try...
I have settled on one washer with the SF840 and SF960. These wings are very user friendly and fun in the waves. Not achieving speeds over 18mph however.
I miss the speed and glide of the 939V2 as my toe side tacks were successful 50% of the time. In all fairness to tacking on the SF's, I am in more challenging, non-flat water, conditions.

Any other experience on the skinny surf?
It could be a good mid-way between Progressive and Skinny rear.
Skinny is maybe too glide oriented.
