What's the theory and practical experience of fuse length and tail size combos?

Obviously shorter fuses and smaller tails are looser. But how do the effects combine and what is optimal? For example, would the short fuse with the 350 progressive tail have less drag than the ultrashort fuse with the 400 progressive tail and still feel similar?

As I mentioned in another post, I'm going to upgrade my HA 1000 to probably the HPS 980 so I've got to invest in a black fuse. I've been using the 1000 with the (red) ultrashort fuse and the old 440 tail trimmed down to 400. I'm looking at the short or ultra short black fuse and the progressive tails. My likely options are the short or ultra short fuse and maybe the 400 or 350 or both progressive tails.

Keen to know people's experience.

I'm 80kg and normally on flat or wind/small swell trying to catch bumps. I realise that the 400 or 460 HA tails are the best for glide/pump and downwinding but I'm mainly interested in turning here, just to keep things simple.

Obviously, demoing all combos would be preferable but I'm not that close to the shop and conditions vary alot so it's hard to compare.

Thanks.

I don't think fuselage length contributes to drag very much. Shorter fuselages give you greater change in pitch when you pump.
If you're used to using the silly short fuselage, you should probably stick with that or ask the guys you Sail with what they use.

I'm using a HPS1050 with the 400 tail that has the curve tips as I want manoeuvrability and light wind performance. There is also a flat 400 speed tail which is faster but not as manoeuvrable.

At 80kg you should get the HPS880.

I'm the same weight and went from 1000 to 880 too.

Just get a progressive stab 350 or 375 with an ultra short stab. Keep it simple

I agree, keep it simple... shortest fuse combined with smallest stab!

How did you find the low end on the 880 compared to the 1000? Surely the 880 can't get flying some days when the 1000 would. Did you keep the 1000 for the light wind days?
