Went out over powered, too lazy to change down. Second beer now and can feel I will be sore for a few days.
Upside was getting on foil was instant.

I've used a harness on and off. It goes good but I tend to get spanked by gusts on occasion. Does help for slow long slots upwind for sure.

I'll own up to putting the hook through the deck of my board once or twice...

Legit waist harness or hook on waist leash?

Legit kite harness. Which is overkill, but that's what I had hanging around.

I ride with a harness all the time can't really imagine riding 100% without one.I just use simple dakine maniac hook in my waist leash webbing works grea hardly know it's there, and duotone harness lines are excellent adjustable. When getting in close to wave zone just unhook and let her hover.

I made a simple harness, used it a couple of times and haven't used it since.
I really don't see the need, it's just not required IMO.

I think a harness would make overpowered conditions more difficult. It's easy to let the wing self adjust to stupidly strong winds and let the canopy flutter. Things only get messy when you load the wing too much and try to force it to do things.

I would like a harness for extended upwind runs. Those are the only conditions where you want to load the wing and keep it loaded for an extended time. I've seen a video of Alan Cadiz doing a windsurf style water start on a small board hooked in to a wing. That might be useful too.

At the moment I am not game to have anything hard that could knock holes in my board. My early kite foil board got lots of chips and cracks in the rail from the harness hook and it's not something I want to repeat with a fragile SUP foil board.

I'm hoping that a purpose built wing surfing harness will appear on the market with a composite hook that is easy to use and won't damage anything.

PS For me the worst thing about very strong winds is being trapped in the water trying to stop the wing committing harakiri on the upturned foil.

I use a Mystic Majestic X harness. When I end up doing 3 hours or more of winging this gives some relief especially on upwind legs. Also provides back support. You do need to watch mounting the board. As far as gusts just anticipate and rotate the wing to get it neutral.

One of the main things I like about winging compared to kitesurfing or windsurfing is the simplicity and freedom.
No lines, no mast and boom and even moreso no harness, which allows complete freedom of movement for fine adjustments.
Unless I wanted to do a 20km upwinder I wont use mine again.
Each to their own though.

I too love the simplicity after windsurfing and kiting.

Yeah one of the best aspects is no harness and as a side effect I'm now stronger when I windsurf and need to pump and as you get older keeping strength is so important ??

Thanks for thoughts, I didn't get as sore as I thought after over powered session. So I'll put the harness on the back burner for now.

I only use mine for long upwind tacks...but i always wear it because my right shoulder gets tight sometimes and hooking in helps it loosen up without going in or stopping.
I also admit that i like the feeiing of having my lower back, stomach and kidneys kind of protected from carbon swords :)

To that point during the summer I was winging and the wind had tanked (domed - warm day/water cold) and was down wind of put in and came up on a steel structure in the water. I bailed to save the foil but my backside hit part of the structure right on my harness. Glad I had the protection, and have since thought might help on the infrequent taco occasions.

Also use the kite line at the back for Oceanus Reel leash. In steeper waves I like to be clear of the board if a breach occurs ;o)

Lots of riders here take the minimalist approach though.
