I began winging not long ago and made several gear choices that, for me, made learning more difficult than I hoped. A friend of mine is on the verge of buying gear and has asked me about my setup. I wanted to check in here on my novice recommendation to see if I am not completely leading them astray. The rider weight is 68kg and comes from a surfing and SUP background. I weight about the same and came to winging from kiting. I have ridden the Takuma Kujira 1210 but now mainly ride Armstrong HA and HS foils on an 85cm mast and 60/70cm fuselage under a 95L Naish Hover WingSUP. I find the board is relatively easy to stand up on and paddle when I have the HS1550v2 on and thought that this test demonstrates that the stability is good enough at my weight. With a wing to balance on, it is a comfortable size. The 1550 also gives me a lot (almost too much ) lift. But I have already forgotten the humbling experience of learning, and I learned on the Kujira rather than the larger Armstrong. Would it seem reasonable to recommend a 85-95L board, and a 1500-1700 cm2 foil and a 4-5m wing for a beginning winger in 17-22 knot winds?

If that was my first set up I would of really struggles at 78kgs. my spot usually has heavy side chop, straight on shore.
so I would say depends on natural ability and local conditions.

How large of board and foil would you think would work if you were starting out?

I started on a 125 Naish and 2000cm low aspect foil. im now on a 95lt, and HA1400, but I still can't gybe. I think I could of started on the 110. I think it totally depends on local conditions and skill, my skills aren't great. I see so many vids of wind and flat water, where I go if you get wind it gets choppy and swell.
