Troppo be careful sailing at Stark Bay, especially if you're on your own, as the seabreeze is offshore on that side of the island.

I blew a boom (both sides) sailing out there recently and self-rescuing would've been challenging. Fortunately I had a buddy with a boat who was on the ball and picked me up before I drifted too far from shore.

If I was on my own I'd probably check out the south side of the island (Stricko's maybe?).

While you're waiting for the seabreeze to come in, go and do some snorkelling at Little Salmon Bay.
Not as much colour in the coral and fish as at Green Island, but plenty to see.

Can anyone answer, with good authority - Is Rotto really as windy as the graphs seem to indicate, all the time?? Or is the the wind reading just taken really high up at the top of some little valley?

You don't hear a lot mentioned about windsurfing at Rotto, but if it is THAT windy (gusting 40 knots in the seabreeze yesterday for example), it must be up there with the likes of Pozo & Maui amongst the windiest windsurfing spots on the planet. From the looks of it, Rotto seems to be a good ten knots windier than Perth on any given day, and from just about any direction.

Chris I seem to recall someone on here (Seabreeze) saying the windmeter is at the top of a hill somewhere and is therefore a bit misleading.

I still reckon it's at least 5K stronger on average than the coast.

I think the only reason we don't hear more about the sailing out there is due to the difficulty / logistics involved...you really need a boat to take full advantage of it...anyone want to chuck in a few dollars and buy an ex-cray boat?

As a regular windsurfer/boaty at Rotto I can vouch that it is as windy as the graphs say. Problem is that it doesn't usually easy up until midnight so you need to be on a mooring close in if spending the night there.

Have to watch out for the shallow reefs all over the place, but a tide of about 0.8m is usually OK to get over most of it.

Thompson's Bay is a good spot for flat water speed runs and there's very little reef to worry about.
