Am planning on heading up to either Port Dension or Horrocks for a few days. Simply to go camping. Which is best bet for sailing - I know I'm passing by many good sailing spots. What is level for either place - one experienced windsurfer, one not so experienced windsurfer.
Wanted to go camping and maybe windsurfing - not other way around.
cheers
when? Dongara is pretty good for wavesailing, Horrocks not so sure but should be OK. Neither much good from now til september but, unless you jag it.
Dongara needs swell, and some testicles plus maybe a spare fin or 2!
Inside the main bay at horrocks probably isn't good for sailing, as a strong current runs down-wind as waves push over a reef that is only open at the north end. Don't know about the beaches north and south.....
Horrocks would be your best bet, sail off the boat ramp or a km north, lots of waves, camp and sail at little bay.
I dont know Port Denison but have sailed a lot at Horrocks and think it is a top spot. As mentioned there is a stronh north bound current in front of the jetty and boat ramp, but if you walk up the beach to the first little headland a 100m north of the boat ramp the current dissispates and is suitable for a less experienced sailor.
Straight out from there is ' the gap' where boats escape the lagoon. the waves are excellent here. Larger than most other spots on the coast and well suited to windsurfing. Great fun.
If you are going to Horrocks for Easter you might have trouble finding somewhere to stay as it gets booked out quite early. Even the campsite.
Little Bay is also very nice, but a bit feral camping with uncontrolled camping creating quite a mess in my view.
Hope this helps
Cheers
