Hi WA windsurfers,
I am heading over to WA from Melbourne in December/Jan for a few weeks. Part of that time I will stay on rotto (~a week). I'm intermediate level only, not up for dangerous surf breaks yet. Can somebody please advise me whether there are any spots on rotto that might suit? Are you allowed to windsurf freely there (ie any restricted areas etc)? I am used to swell on VIC coast just not much with surf, mostly I sail the bay. Some advice welcome thanks.
cheers.
Hi
I'm a local intermediate sailor and I wouldn't windsurf at Rotto although it is a great place for lots of other things. Getting your gear over there on the ferry is OK but once you are there it is difficult to transport as the Rottnest Island Authority won't transport boards. You'd need a bike with a trailer, and when I last checked they don't rent trailers.
The wind in many locations is offshore (and strong) so it is risky to sail. The only wave spot is the west end and the wind is offshore there - sailing only recommended if you have a rescue boat.
I have heard of windsurfers in Thmpson's Bay surfing the little reef break there, but again the seabreeze is offshore.
Spend your time on Rotto soaking up the sun and snorkelling.
Leave the sailing for the better spots on the mainland.
Hi Windxtasy,
Thanks for the advice. This is a big help. I am also in two minds about lugging the gear on the plane and since a few places hire gear on the mainland it helps with my decision. I think I'll take your advice with Rotto.
