Got a few days off work so jumped in the car and drove South.....ended up in Albany.
Anyone got any suggestions as to where to sail? I've got everything from wave kit to my coondanup weed/speed set up
If you were in Albany today you would have noticed the harbour full of whitecaps with a strong SW wind gusting to well over 30 knots!
Main issue with getting out on the harbour at this time of year is the shallow tide, with low tide at around 1.30-2pm over next few days. Forget sailing the ocean in a westerly wind, though there are some ocean beaches that could be sailed in a sou-wester such as Ledge and Nanarup (though unsure about wave riding potential of either).
Other potential launch spots:
From harbour foreshore between the Entertainment Centre and ANZAC Peace Park. Drive onto unused gravel area from Princess Royal Drive and head towards foreshore. Rig up on grassed area beside rock wall, then carry you kit down concrete ramp at rear of Peace Park to water.
In a strong westerly, try the small beach beside Chipana Drive at Little Grove, just west of the yacht club. Wind can sometimes be a bit light inshore but if you can get enough wind to sail out into middle of harbour then you'll have a blast! A shallow tide would require a bit of a walk offshore into deeper water.
Eastern end of harbour off Quaranup Rd, assuming there is enough water depth. Look for the short track to the beach where you can drive down on to the beach and rig up there if you have 4wd, or if only 2wd then park and rig up beside the road and carry your kit down to beach.
W-NW wind most of today already gusting to 26 knots at 8am. Either Little Grove near yacht club or Quaranup peninsular would be great!
