Hi, moved here from Adelaide last week and was hoping for some clues on saling spots at the weekend in the metro area (river or ocean). Unsure whether the forcast will promote a seabreeze.
Any help is appreciated.
Great city by the way!
The forecast for this weekend is fairly dismal. Seabreezes will be weak and very coastal, and we have seen the best of the easterlies for this cycle.
Your best chance of a sail would be this afternoon at Safety Bay, though the traffic going south will be heavy.
If you have big gear you could try Saturday morning at Pelican Point or Majestic Point (Ardross St, Applecross). Strongest seabreeze in the metro area is usually Pinnaroo Point. That probably gives you your best chance of a sail in the afternoon.
For most of autumn the best chance of a sail is on the morning easterlies, (aside from cold fronts) but as they are offshore you are limited to the river. The first one of the cycle is usually the strongest and will often persist until the afternoon. Generally they are strongest between 9 & 10 in the morning.
Welcome to WA Chris,, and as Windxtasy indicated its looking a little dismal for this weekend. If it goes at all, Ocean side will be the place so, Safety Bay, Pinnaroo point, or Woodman point will be the spots.
Thanks guys. Shame about the weekend, are we saying that afternoon is the best bet for say woodman point?
Mineral, Where is the best out of those locations to bring wife kids along? Beaches, facilites etc?
Thanks for the tips, much appreciated.
OCEAN POINTS.
Safety Bay, large lawn area, toilets and gear wash facility, some large Pine tree and shade, small deli style shop across the road + fish n chip and Piza shop. Good parking, Penguin island area just North of the pond area, small coffee style shop. You will need a weed fin for Safety Bay. You can get away with it, but it is a real pain.
Pinnaroo, large lawn area no shops in walking distance, but shade and large carpark, and BBQ Gazebo style seating, showers n toilets. Whitfords City shopping back up the road five minutes away. You can get away without a weedfin
Both you will need to dodge the kites, but its no great hassle.
River, both Melville and Peli point large lawn area, gear wash, but no shops. Toilet close by at Peli, not so close at Melville. Weed fin not a real need. Peli has gear hire, Melville doesnt
Fingers x'ed for a little seabreeze this arvo.
If it happens i'll see yous at SB ![]()

Keeping eyes peeled on Rotto wind charts ![]()
if people expect the economy of wa to prop up the nation without the relatively minor (or should that be miner) inconveniences which come along with that, then bad luck. im here to work, live and sail and am enjoying two out of three very much so far. reckon ill enjoy the sailing when i get time too!
thaknyou for your replies on sailing spots, the predictabiity of wa's wind is not apparent quite yet, and with a tight schedule any input is much apprecited.
