Hi all,
Have just started windsurfing and looking to buy used windsurf gear. It seems beginner boards are particularly hard to come by at the moment.
I am 80kg and have done 3 mornings of lessons. From what I have been told, a board between 130lt -200lt and with a centre board would be ideal.
Any advice or offers would be greatly appreciated.
As a windsurfer, you are at a tough point on the learning curve as you will rapidly advance with more hours on the water and quickly outgrow true beginner gear. Beg, borrow and steal what you can for now and hold off on a major purchase for another couple of weeks when you will be ready for a board that will last you much longer. The market is much larger too.
Look for something around the 130L end of your scale and tolerate the challenge it will be for a couple of days.
While a centreboard is great now, again you will rapidly outgrow it if your goal is to go planning and blasting. See if you can rent gear for another session or two and then you might be ready to move onto a board which does not have a centreboard.
After the starter's board, I bought a 160L Fanatic Shark which is a 60L above my weight, and used it extensively. Floaty, easy to uphaul, and was able to go reasonably fast (25knts) with a 6m sail which made it simpler for learning. (Harness, straps)
I sold it after a year, and have been kicking myself for selling it since. I now have a 145 L board and it is my most used board for the winds to 25 knts.
As a practical advice, the Starboard Go boards were great for starting and progressing. Stable, floaty, and can still go well.
give the centre board a miss and go about 150lt if you can find one , thatll keep ya going for a while .
