Hi, excuse my ignorance but what factors are needed to guarentee and good seabrezze in Perth and down south in Margret River?
Is the position of the High in the Indian Ocean a big factor?
I was there two summers ago and had a great time but it never really fired. Going over this Xmas and hoping it will be a little better.
Thanks in advance for any help.

perth can be fickle,,, margaret river fickaler,,,if ur traveling all the way from nsw head north for a higher score %.
I have to STRONGLY disagree with what is being said here. (its a forum)
Margs is consistent as December through March - i have seen it blow 40 days straight there.
Its a truly magical set up..
Here is why
If you dont get a Westcoast coast seabreeze (generated by westcoast Se / E previaling wind) then you get the Soueaster (generated by Ne prevailing wind) - which is actually the south coast seabreeze busting across the corner and delivering cross off to margs. This Wind doesnt blow any further north than margs as thats as far across the sW corner as the coastal geometry lets the breeze get. So Yals doesnt get it.
Often you will get both breezes in the same day.
Its fair to say that margs is even more consistent than Gerro at this time of year. But it tends to be a gustier sailing experience (in the Sou easter) - made up for the fact that it is more cross off than anywhere (in the Se er) and it always seems to be mast high - with an olympic size swimming pool chunk of water in the lip ready to throw you into the updraught out the front of the wave. Big floaty lifter to be had here. This leads to a whole range of emotions - usually starting with fear, then elation. BUT ALWAYS ENDING UP SOMEWHERE BACK NEAR FEAR.
From my experience its Very competitive in the line up and you will see some of the world's best wave sailors at Margs - lots of pros camp here in the PWA off season
Having said that -Not many crew hit the lip down there - many touring pros are humbled here- plenty of shoulder soldiers - and if thats you - or you arent confident in lip smacking elsewhere - you will definitely have more fun in the thin lipped action found further north of perth. The margs shoulder deosnt really deliver any thrills and is a waste of time and money.
If you are into jumping - southsides (Southside of margs break) has an epic booster ramp that will send you SUPER high once the Se kicks in properly - but you want to be a 40ft plus backie spear master before youd want to attempt that - not the place to be learning - and if you wipe out the next wave can steamroll you onto the rocks!!
Perth / Bunbury tends to be the non windhole of the westcoast - go south or north from this region and your days of sailing increase dramatically.
All of the westcoast and southcoast (The southcoast isalot windier than most crew realise) set ups are destroyed by any prevailing winds bending further N of NE through WNW,W and WSW - Sw and further to NE delivers the goods again!
Thanks Matt, that's a good read.
I haven't sailed Margs but I'm planning to head down in the next couple of weeks to give it a crack - I shall now do so with even greater trepidation!
Gulp...
nah reflex has it all wrong. margs is never windy, it's always on shore and it rarely gets over 1-2 ft
i moved here and it was the worst decision of my life.
When you visit margs, keep an eye out for the blokes with the oldschool gear. When it gets mast+ they will outshred any pro. Good to see.
reflex is probably on the dollar alby, just from personal experience i've been down 5 different times in the summer ,, on promises of wind....
skunked every time...
maybe i'm the margs wind jinx
swell was always there though....
that pic is from tassie.
The thing with margs is that if there are waves their is no wind
Lots of sharks too big ones with big teeth.
Lots of stingers
And people always steel your stuff out of your car.
I had to get a dog just to guard my car
Crac looks like you have settled in down there and are becoming protective of it, good on ya ,it takes a while to truly understand it.Better the winters may be and summer crouds easier to handle wih time under ya belt!smack ya tassi one day![]()
