Some folks last night were telling me that its the dredging of Freo harbour that is causing the current stink - prevalent around the old Victoria Bridge. It may have made its way with the plume down the coast?

Geez come down to Dutchies where you get sheep ship smell and the constant diesel exhaust from the dredging barge

I know the obvious reply to this is 'teaspoon of cement princess', but shouldn't there be air quality stipulations or legislation for the dredging. Why should I/general public have to suffer from a commercial operation? I DO NOT AGREE with the American style sue-everyone/everything mentality, but in terms of an environmental and quality of life aspect, surely there should be limits to the amount or timeliness of their pollution? I'm not sure if its the transition from the fresh ocean air to the diesel exhaust wind tunnel, but its close to choking sometimes! Does it run 24//7? The obvious choice would be to stop operations during 2-7pm, all other hours people are either at home, or the winds predominantly offshore. The dredge probably has to get serviced daily anyway...

I bloody knew it! I smelt it too!
At first I thought it was my rashie that smelt, then I thought it was my hair hahaha but after smelling it more and more I could only compare it to my sisters horse stable.
I told Leech but he couldnt smell it and blamed it on someone farting!
When I got home and to my surprise I could still smell it!
Then I could only think it was something upwind getting blown by the seabreeze.

The stale piss smell is definitely from sheep transport ships that come into Freo. It's been going on for over 20 years. It has nothing to do with the dredging.
With a good westerly blowing you can smell them before you see them. Pretty amazing really. But the good news is, you will never get sneaked up on by a sheep ship.
Years ago I was sitting up on the dune watching the guys sailing.
I thought I must be sitting where some dog had peed because all I could smell was pith.
I moved about 5 metres North,. Same thing.
Another 5 metres. Same again.
Man! Some dog must have hosed down the whole beach
About 15 minutes later a sheep ship came cruising into view and once it had past, the smell disappeared, until the wind swung SSW.

Once they get into port, if a good southerly is blowing, the smell blows right up the coast to Cottesloe & further.
You get used to it and after a while you dont even smell it.

No worse than the rotting seaweed at some times of the year which can last for a month or two.

Years ago I was on a ship at anchor in gage roads. We had been there for weeks and the boiler water was starting to run low so the engineers decided to make water whilst we were at anchor. Normally this is done in deep ocean but the circumstances forced the engineers to do it close to shore.
Making water is done in a machinery that "flash boils" water in a vacuum at about 50 degrees C then a sterilisation process can be used to make it potable. In this case the steriliser wasn't used as the water would be treated for use in the boiler.
During the course of the day a sheep carrier anchored near us. Nothing unusual but it was raining and a slick of stinky lanoline was spreading out through the anchorage.
The engineer down in the engineroom did not know this, and thought that whilst he had the machinery running decided to top up the pot water tank. It was unclear whether he started the steriliser (he claims that he did) but 6 hours later the whole crew bar 2 or 3 people who hadnt drank water up to that point came down with this horrendous case of dysentry.
Admittantly the dysentry may of have been caused by something else but the coincedence seemed too strong to not put it down to the pot water being contaminated.
Another long story to get to the point that if you can smell it, then it is probably at concentrations that may cause problems. Possibly time to move beach until it clears.
