Hi. I'm heading down to Yallingup next week for a holiday.

The Windsurfing WA website suggests that most spots are for expert wave sailors only, which I'm not.

But, are there any spots nearby with smaller more forgiving conditions that might suit a person who is carving their gybes OK but still needing to progress on smaller waves?

Augusta. windy - usually smallish beach break swell and works on a SW or SE or wind.

or just go and watch Margs mainbreak it might be small this time of year, and if you can stay upwind and waterstart you'd probably be fine.. just breaking masts can be a pain, cos its a bit of a swim. take a powerex
Theres also a number of ppl sailing if there is wind at the above two spots, so ask questions...sit back and watch first.. its not too scary.

have a crack - you'll be amazed at how quickly you learn when you have to.

otherwise get plenty of practice at lancelin (or dutch-in when in perth).

yallingup is a bit sketchy at times, and is sorta sheltered from the southerly.. ive only had success there on a NWer in moderate swell a dead (30knot) easterly in small swell.

Gracetown is apparently reasonably friendly on a westerly.- havent sailed there.

you can sail flat water out from dunsborough on a NE or WNW although rare -
i went out there on my race gear whalewatching on a WSWerly in November - was fun but had to swim my gear out to the wind. Saw 4 whales.. had one pop up about 15m away.. it had a big eye... and a baby.

yeh, augusta should be fine in a SW. forgiving waves.

lancelin is a good place to get into the waves if you ever get up there.

augusta is ok, probably not ideal for a newbie tho. i used to go there and it actually put me off wave sailing for a bit ( what an utterly stupid notion )

heres my tips. SE is dead onshore ther and will make it very difficult. the waves are very frequent and quite powerfull.

walk out as far as u can then go hard upwind for till u get to the river mouth n then gybe. try not to sail along the beach further than the rivermouth. i made that my gybe point.

rig a bit bigger than u think u might need, its always good to have extra power for when ur heading out.

the waves get huge out the back but are pretty fun. almost steep enough to ride but they dont quite break. just cruise around out the back till you sus it out.
