The kiters at Pinnaroo are feeling a bit vulnerable these days after the Joondalup council drafted a management plan banning them from quite a few northern beaches (Pinnaroo is one of the only spots remaining in the 'green zone', so they're probably feeling a bit protective of 'their' turf).

That said I sail regularly at Pinnaroo and haven't had any dramas with kiters. The windsurf crew generally launch and sail downwind of the kiters, and the separation seems to work for the most part.

Where were you when you had your run in?

Oh so they are feeling agitated with the shire. No this run in occured in the darn carpark when this dork tried to cut me off. I just thought he was so rude but anyway maybe they are a bit agro with the possible bans. hey mate hope they wont ban us?

I've always found both kiters and windsurfers there to be a friendly bunch...

But there are tools everywhere.

I rocked up at Pinaroo about 1pm one day (I'm a student ;)), never sailed there before, solid 15-20, found it completely void of windsurfers. There were about 7 kite surfers there so figured it was a windsurfer exclusion zone or something?? Obviously I was wrong. If downwind (ie. North) of the point is appropriate etiquette then I'll give it a go next time and hopefully dont cop any agro.

Hi cmstruwe,

Yep north of the big white truck with AKS on the side is fine for windsurfers.

It's my local, never had any problem with either windsurfers or kiters there. If you want to tack upwind then stay a good 300m out, the kiters don't normally venture out all that far.

shouldn't it be the other way round ???????

kiters downwind to the north....makes more sence!!!!...

that way the learners wont get in the way , when they drop their kites and learn their body drags...

where all the learners are now;; is the main access in and out to the point,, more chance of accidents with general public

also, the northern part is a wind shadow for windurfers but not really for kites..

I used to sail regular at Pinnaroo when no kites existed. When times changed the kites discovered Pinnaroo but used to rig and launch in main boat ramp access and windsurfers sailed slightly North towards Mullaloo - fine till the numbers rose -almost immediately problems arose with the kites working down wind towards us, after numerous close calls and confrontations I got sick of dealing with unreasonable attitudes and moved to North beach and Crazy's as did other sailors. I don't know what is wrong with some of these guys!
As an after thought have you noticed that even though the Swan river has a large kite area seperate from the Windsurfers who rig and sail near the car park it seems that even that is not enough and they have encroached on this windsurfing area, windsurfers stay out of their zones - why can't they do the same ???? It is insane to launch a kite among so many windsurfers. I think the problem is that as their sport grows they are actually crowding each other to the point that they will launch anywhere irrespective of whether windsurfers are there already.
I am not anti kite each to thier own - but I have to say they do seem to contain an unusual amount of inconsiderate 'tools'.
