There is a good chance that I am heading to Perth for Christmas (house swap) with the other half and was wondering what the sailing is like locally? Is it worth getting a good hire car and driving up to Lancelin for the day or can I get good wavesailing closer? Ideally I’d stay at Lancelin but seeing as we should have free accommodation – over Christmas – it seems a little crazy. My other half does not sail and is not a fan of many of the windsurf locations we go to (it all stems from her being hit on the head by a beach chair at Kanaha thanks to the wind!). The drive doesn’t look ideal but I often do the Sydney Gerroa drive for the day so I guess I could put up with it!

Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

Depends whereabouts in Perth your staying.

There is a plethora of spots around perth. The purists will tell you there's no waves in Perth, but some of the northern beaches can be OK.

If your staying north of the river, then Lancelin is only about 45mins to 1 hour away, so an arvo trip is not out of the question.

The trouble with Perth mid summer is lack of swell, can be dead flat for weeks at a time.
Lancelin does pick up what swell there is better than most local spots.

You may be lucky, there can be the odd big swell come thru.

Thanks for the replies. All the pics from WA look like epic waves in Summer - I'm guessing it's better at the beginning/end? Lano sounds like a good choice as I could always go freestyling with the Euros!

I'll check back in closer to the date to get some ideas on kit to bring.

Cheers
Ben

Well all the good photos get taken on the good days, and there are some, they can just be weeks apart.
There's also the Margaret River area, and the South coast. That gets much better swell than Perth, although not as much wind.

Hey Crash, i know how much you like waves so Lano will be a definate choice, only an hour and a bit up the coast so can be an arvo, at least one trip to Geraldton would be highly recomended, gets heaps of wind so your big sails won't get used much Around metro Scarbs is a bit onshore compared to most east coast breaks, Dutchies can be good with the right swell.

Hope to see you when your over...

you're making the trip all the way

u may as well make the 1 hr trip north

perth = 4/10

lano = 8.5/10

have a barney with the missus and storm off up north for a 10hr drive to achieve 10 on 10

wish i was in WA at chrimbo

Lano 8.5/10 is a big call

I'd agree with perth, then give Lano 7 , G/head and Coro 8.0, Sunset on it's day 9.5 and the gloo a 10/10

with me ol mate Greeny.

dont get me wrong,i love corros more than life it's self,, but i cant put it ahead of lano --- on it's day, ski slope build up waves, heart in your mouth drops and the dreamy reform section.

hmmm, had a N.D.E way out the back of corros 1km to the north, nice section of reef there too. magical place.

never had the chance to goto spotX and probably never will now

ok, off for a sail in the freezing cold bay now. if i'm lucky i may get some knee high chop.yay

I think Scarbs on its day is sick,you just need to but the time in.

Cause its a wind swell you will get a solid wave nearly all summer

heaps better than driving to lano for a chest high wave thats has as much power as my Nanna.

Perth 10
Lano 5
Gero 3
Gnaraloo 2.5 its get an extra .5 because the waters warm
Melbourne -10 Sorry Windy had to add that one
