Howdy Folks, looking for some pointers here....
Am new to the sport, have recently been taking lessons and am building my collection of Kit, have got my Kite and Harness but unfortunatly a board will have to wait a few more paydays..
My local beach would be either Pinnaroo Point or Mullaoo..Having been reading the forums for the last few months getting excited for getting out - I know there is a lot of etiquitte and local rules when it comes to riding at locations. I am wondering where on the beach at Pinnaroo or Mullaoo would be best/safest to launch my kite and get in the water to practice my kite control and body dragging - I want to keep practising and improving my kite skills until I can get a board but obviously don't want to get in the way of those out having a good time and upsetting people (from what I have read that does happen) so I figuered the best thing to do would be to ask and see if you Pinnaroo locals can point me to a good area..
I was about to have a joke about another kiter posting in windsurf forum but appears you are asking here so as to avoid agro with windsurfers? If so, top form. ![]()
I don't sail there, but (1) downwind and (2) appropriate conditions and (3) get lessons, whcih you already have but just make sure you ask the instructor if you are ready to go it alone.
You will avoid the wrath of the windsurfers, and more importantly the vitriolic posts in kite forum about noobs. ![]()
If you decide to go out at Mullaloo, then please be aware of where kiting is banned. There are signs up, and you can also do a search on here to see what the zones are.
When I was in your situation I body dragged and learnt to get on the board down in Perth on the river -- I wouldn't be learning up here. Pinaroo gets very busy and there's only really a small area to learn in -- if you get dragged 100m downwind then you're right in the middle of loads of windsurfers, any further down and you get stuck in a big wind shadow.
I don't know what it's like in the zone where you can actually kite at Mullaloo, it might be OK, but relations are pretty strained at the best of times with the council there so if I were you I'd be driving down to Perth. Once you can get on the board there's no problem mowing the grass at Pinaroo, but it's not somewhere I'd be trying to teach myself.
Note this is my personal opinion only, I'm sure loads of people have learnt at Pinaroo (I've seen heaps), it's just that I consider learning on the river to be safer.
Besides, you can take advantage of these verdammten easterlies!
Thanks for the pointers folks - all gratefully received..
Windxtasy - yeah, your right.. I did post here in error to start with however seem to have had a better response here than the same post in Kiting ![]()
The last thing I want to be doing is annoying those already on the water as I am aware newbies dragging around can annoy some people(everyone) if they are in the wrong place - hence my question.
Feel pretty confident to go it alone - Have had 3x3hour lessons and did get to try with a board in the last. So until I can get a board I want to keep practising and improving my kite handling.
The river sounds like a good shout nebbian, Where did you go? I know there are a few spots down there..
If Pinaroo is your local beach - I'd go there rather than drive all the way to the river. There are others learning there too if you need to seek advice... and people keeping an eye out... and it probably one of safest beaches to learn.
Frankly, the fact that you are thinking about being a considerate beach user means you'll have no hassles at pinnaroo.
For me personally, I windsurf there a lot (years), never had a problem with learning kiters.
Kitesurfing on the river - Pelican Point, near UWA,
Melville Beach Parade Applecross (The eastern end - this is a good spot because kitesurfing at the eastern end and windsurfing at the western end keeps them fairly well separated, but no good in an easterly)
Burke drive, Attadale near Pt Walter, mostly kiters few windsurfers,
Point Walter spit.
suss out the short chop - its really quite bad at Pinnaroo due to the ideal (ie perfect storm for horrible chop) spacing between the outer reef and the beach
this prevents long period sea from developing - which even the downwind exposed side of woodies seems to get due to the longer fetch (its a nice spot to ride)
but isnt short enough to keep the water flat
inside lagoon at lancelin has the same problem
its chronic and makes your rails bounce all over the place regardless of what craft you ride. In short its a horrible horrible place to ride.
in the long term i would recommend doing the drive to another spot...
Whats with all the red thumbs? Kiters ay, damned if they do, and damned if they do it considerately!
I miss pinnas,,, my knees don't![]()
Happy days many moons ago on huge winter storm,,, big glassy waves off the harbour wall![]()

I love sailing at Pinnaroo. ![]()
I've never had any dramas with kiters there, but then I don't just sail BAFO in the windsurf zone, I like to sail upwind to the breakwater or out to Little Island.
The chop can be harsh, but on those days when the seabreeze doesn't make it in to the river, there can still be a lovely 15-20K seabreeze at Pinnaroo.
It's great open water sailing, and there are some really fun naughty mile runs if you want to get the adrenaline pumping ![]()
