moving my ass over to perth for a taste of the good windsurfing life!
I'm from sydney and been to perth a million times last year to go windsurfing.. (may have only been 9 times not a million)
I'm curious to hear from the locals to find out more about perth from your perspective as to where should i live? I'm thinking of getting a house in safety bay, by the water?
Are there suburbs i should avoid due to crime?
Any recommendations on where you would live?
Whats the job and housing market like over there now?
Should i move to perth or would you avoid it? (economy thing in midn and all)
Any other thoughts or advice?
muchly appreciated :)
Simon
Don't come if you work in law-enforcement. You'll get no judicial support at all!
But it's windy and beautiful.
Just do it!
Wait 6 months to buy a house. Average price is dropping. (not so much near the beach)
Safety Bay is good for flat water stuff, not much of any waves this way south.
The area and local suburbs are good value to buy into at the moment, just depends on where you get to work and how far you want to travel. Yeah some suburbs are a bit average and to avoid, but plenty to pick from for better.
The new southern railway and a freeway that will take you both directions soon is good transport options north to south.
I live close to here and its been all good, but previously I was North of the river, and this was better if cutting down traveling time if heading to Lancelin for a sail, and other northern beaches that offered everything from wave to flat.
Job market is changing, but depends what you are chasing and your line of field is.
Good luck on moving.
I did it a year and a half ago, best thing I ever did.
Now isn't quite the right time to come over if you're after windsurfing though, the seabreezes are all but spent for the season...
Sort out your shiz, sell everything that isn't absolutely essential, then give away half of what's left. Come across in the spring, and join the party ![]()

mmm thanks peeps... food for thought... I'm hating sydney right now for lots of reasons and hence my desire to move to perth sooner rather than later.
It might pay to give it a bit before i move across tho.
I'm in engineering currently.. - mechanical...
i understand there is a shortage of jobs there for people like me.. so might need to consider a career change for a little while. Unsure of what to do but my circumstances here have changed ten fold recently and yeh...
i'm waffling...
Anyone got a job? lol All i need is a job then i'm coming there!
come on over, best decision I ever made one of the best decisions ( I could get into a lot of trouble )
Now not great for wind though. You have a few months of low wind times to get your stuff together.
On the jobs front Gold mines are going well still: look at them!
yeah you could move to rocko, saftey bay, geraldton but why not give esperance a go. get away from all the crowds and kiters. but do wait at least six months to buy. enjoy where eva you choose.
"Good" engineers are hard to find as well. Alot of people are most likley cleaning house so you might jag something. The last few years brought a lot of Dip ****s outta the wood work so if you know your stuff you'll most likley get a start. I have lived in a lot of differant places in and out of Oz and i still find Perth or WA the best place to be and I have only just started to windsurfing. So come on over there is plenty of room and the waters great!
Just bought all the steel for the trailer to carry my stuff over... she will be a 1900 x 4800 (internal dimensions) box trailer with high wall sides and a cage... Cant wait to get it finished...
Early/Mid July is the date/time we are looking at. Just need a job now. its a bit hard to look for jobs sitting here in sydney!
Will be over there in perth for the Easter long weekend 9th till 13th April if anyone is keen to say hello!
Can't wait!
alfy.
when your making your trailor, make enough room for a bed and a tv.
stay unemployed, live off beans and rice.
maybe work for a week or two up north or get the dole.... to fund the year. then spend it chasing wind / waves all over WA..
THE DREAM costs nothing (almost)![]()
I hear ya Alfredo, I got burned badly by a recruitment agency over here, word of advice, if you're after a job in IT, avoid [company name that rhymes with "Handle"] at all costs!
Yowzers that still hurts, a year later. B@stards.
Good luck on making the pilgrimmage, PM me when you're over here and I'll show you around if you like.
If ya looking for a job in mech engineering look up Icon or Ame they r all a happy bunch, never no your luck?
Yeh i am looking for a mechanical engineering kind of role. I'll give them a bell thanks for the heads up.
And yeh when i make the move i'll send u a pm and be good to meet some of you local windsurfing folk... I know my way around perth mostly but i am sure there are some cool places that i dont know about.
I cant wait aye! The steel for the trailer arrives tomorrow morning so i'll start on that very soon might even post up some pics (not that this is a trailer building forum)...
Be there soon!
