What can i say. My treasured custom wave board came off the roof today somewhere between the Karnup and Lakes Road exits on the Forrest highway near Mandurah.

The board is sky blue in colour and was lovingly made by Decrepid. It's called a Wave Wand and has a a small Tushinham sticker on the nose and has a
"shaped by mike layzel" sticker on the tail. The bottom is just plain. I noticed it pretty much straight away but by the time i had backed tracked it was gone.

I would really love this board back as it was made for me as its unreal.

I will happilly pay a reward for its return. Please contact me on 0438978175.

You see these messages crop up every now again and have to seriously ask:

"How the f### do you let a board come off the roof !"

Either your a dumb arse for forgetting to tie them down or

Your a dumb arse for not using proper tie down straps (ie stop using occy straps)

There is no real good excuse for this :)

I'll answer for Bender,

They were 1 week old tie down straps (not the el cheepo ones)

They had held for the previous 200km @ +100kmh and the 390km on the journey up.

Without facts one can appear uninformed and seemingly a wee bit silly

ah road trip - so how many boards did he have on there :P

did he break the straps or did the board slide out heh?

if the board was placed nose forward and upside down the wind should have put pressure forcing it down onto the car.
if he left the nose pointing upwards at those speeds then im not surpised heh.

I had a mate who flipped a 20 footer speed boat onto qwinanna freeway a few years back from loading it onto the trailer badly. He had to get a crane in to remove it .

Cheers for that.

The board was tied on with brand new straps, tail first. it was not over hanging at all is it was on top of my sup(tied on with seperate straps). the front strap holding my wave board snapped. just bad luck. So no, I'm not a "dumb arse" and i dont like being called one either. Thank again for the advice.

Bender, I was hoping your reply was to say that your board had been returned to you.
I feel for you. Fingers crossed for it's safe return.

Sorry for calling you a dumb arse and I hope you do find your board.

The physics of the accident tho do interest me as i carry multiple boards this way all the time. The force required to break the strap unless it was faulty would be pretty big.
was the board in a board cover? if not i can see how it could happen.

if board was placed right way up facing backwards that would make the nose stick up at the back liket a big spoiler exerting pressure - probably enuf to lift the tail off the front creating a gap between the sup and board which would create another preasure wave under it.

If board was upside down then the foot straps would have done the same creating a gap between them again creating a preasure wave between the boards.

Hard to tell if a board bag would make it better or worse. would cause more drag but it has less of an airofoil shape so in theory would produce less lift.

I always double up the straps, (use two) on the front rack. Mind u Ive had good quality straps vibrate loose on corrigated dirt roads. Ya cant beat a well tied rope! Long trips I always use a bit of rope as well as straps.

Hope you get your board back!

What?

How much lift do you think boards make?? its a wonder why Boeing don't just stick two waveboards on top of their planes and sack the wings off..

Now without any dumbass pseudo physics, I would guess brand new straps would be strong enough to almost lift the car off the ground before breaking.. They will take the lift from a board no matter how its tied down.. So maybe there is another explanation... Maybe some eccentric kid cut the straps with a knife for laughs.. Or the Flying Spaghetti Monster absorbed it into the Either..

Bender,
I hope you get the board back - I recall your excitement on a very old thread detailing Decrepit's progress on making it and then you finally using it for the first time.

As (I assume) Peter alluded to, if anyone tries to sell it even with a new paint job there may be some discerning attachments (footstraps and pads) to identify it. We're such a small fraternity that hopefully it will turn up soon.

I'm sure I have a pic some where but I just can't find it.
So here's a pic of it's sister.

Benders board is very similar, main difference is his has black foot pads of a different design, not white.

Decrep,
Out of interest where do you buy the eva foam pads you use on your boards? Nice looking board too.

PS - Apologies Bender for hijacking the thread.

Those pads are from Mark at Stone Surf Gero.

I've made my last 2 lot of pads from the interlocking foam tiles Clarke rubber sell. They have a non slip surface so don't need to be grooved.
