If someone was to ask where is the best place in WA to really learn to wave sail without getting drilled into the reef and avoiding costly kit breakage where would the WA regulars recommend?
Lano is a reef break that looked like you could really take a beating if you get it wrong. Plus when I was there in October 2010 I could just see the tip of the guys mast when I was sailing inside the reef 
fj, on a positive note, you could forget Perth (I rest my case) and move straight to Geraldton. Coronation Beach is 30 mins out of town and is probably one of the best wave learner spots on the planet (2 foot on the inside, ranging progressively up to 5 foot + on the outside on a typical day). And it is seriously windy up there most of the summer. There are a number of other fantastic wave sailing options once you are an expert, including one that is 10 minutes from the cbd.

agreed Coronation be the one :)
Flana, that was just a big day at Lano it is rarely like that. Plus in January there is much less swell, plenty of days less than head hi with a channel to escape in. Say hi if you come up and I'll show u the easy wave

I agree Coronation is a fantastic sailing spot, but I think it's better for learning to jump than wave ride.
It's usually a bit too onshore for good down the line wave riding. You loose to much power in the sail as you come out of the bottom turn.
And it's very hard to find a wave that's peeling left.
I think a better learning wave there would be St'George's if there's a good swell or in front of Sunset beach caravan park if it's smaller.
