Can we beat these cats n kites if the conditions are nice? How much wind gives our best chance?

There was a big kite race a couple of years ago at Leighton (not the Rotto crossing), and I lined a few of them up in around 18 knots of breeze. They were reasonably quick but seemed to be right on the edge of control in conditions that most would find pretty cruisy on a slalom board & 7.0. They crashed a lot. I figure if it's 25 knots plus it'll be tough for us but even tougher for the kites.

Then again they have probably improved.

The more wind the better for us. and also more S - SW :-)

Need to get enough wind that the cats struggle and foils get hard to control but not too much. A proper 20 knot seabreeze would be perfect, cats at the top of their wind range and just perfect for a windsurfer at full tilt. Dead southerly would help too.

A couple of questions.... Does anyone, or anyone you know, want to sell a Personal Locator Beacon from last year's event? Was the hire option advertised last year any good? (www.epirbhire.com) I'll buy a new one if I must but would appreciate any leads/advice on cheaper options.
Many thanks
Dan

Thanks for the reminder Premo - Membership sorted.

Hey Dan
Will find some info here:
www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/distress-beacons.asp

Compulsory for most offshore boating now. You can use EPIRB in lieu of plb (just bulkier, longer life battery), and temporily register any EPIRB in your name as "skipper". Bit if mucking about admin wise, but if you know know someone with boat (Livo?) could do this for the day, save couple hundred $ purchasing or hiring for day.

Last year there were PLBs available at the event for about $50 pre paid per competitor. That arrangement worked quite well I thought, so hopefully we can do that again.

anything up to 20 knots will be ideal for us on the foils . Anything 25 knots and above is going to be where the windsurfers come into their element against us kiters .

TBH 25 KNots plus on a foil is farken scary . You can get some BIIIIIIIIG explosions .

The event takes a lot of effort planning on behalf of the sailing club staff. Everything has been preparred with Saturday in mind. Let's all show up and register in the mornings as planned and let's what the day will bring. Opening party always a possibility:-)
