Hi,
I need some advice for buying a new board for my partner.. He has a 2005 80L Starboard Evo that needs replacing as Im surprised a board with that many dings still floats.
At the end of last summer he was eyeing up an Evil Twin at Margaret River. What size would work for him? He's probably about 70-75kg and spends the majority of his time on the waves at Scarbs, Margs, Lancelin or Greenhead.
He's um and ahh's about wanting the Evil Twin.. would the current Evo be a comparison to his 2005 model ?? He's a fan of Starboards..
Can anyone give me some ideas? Or should I try to convince him to buy one with me? He reckons his dinged up board is fine and is reluctant to spend the $ .. I've heard guys laughing at it as he brings it up from the beach.. time to replace i think!
Pls advise..
Cheers
Skekles...
Sometimes boards are like old jeans, you just grow really attached to them.
If you convince him to change, and he doesn't like the new board, he may not be all that happy with you.
Best if he can try one first, to make sure he likes it.
We all have different preferences, and what may be fantastic to some, may be less than desirable to others.
Others just like to have the "latest and greatest" "in gear" to look cool.
These are also the ones who laugh at others old fashioned or damaged stuff.
Your partner is obviously not one of these, he's after a board that responds the way he likes regardless.
Perhaps he's really attached to his old board, or perhaps he just is reluctant to spend the money.
If the latter, he'll probably be delighted for you to buy a board for him, that will take the spending guilt out of it.
Probably best to get him involved in the decision as to what he wants. It is very difficult to choose a board for someone else and get it right.
The upside is, he probably won't want to trade you in for a newer shinier model when you get a bit old and dinged up either!
Hey, where's that guy's harness? ![]()
Sounds like ppl recommend he chooses the board.. I'll just have to take him shopping kicking and screaming *sigh*
Cheers all!
I would second PC simpsons response. You could also get a custom graphic of yourself, or a sticker made up of you to stick on the deck. or a special saying or motto.
Would be great

Unfortunately Evil Twins aren't in production anymore. The only wave boards on offer are the Kode and Quad. Both are available in 80 and 81 litres respectively. The Kodes are single fin though so he'll probably want a change. Maybe try to tee up a test for his birthday (so you've got something physical to give him for his birthday), then tell him its a test and he can choose something.
I'd recommend a Nude as it'd be made custom for your partner, though I don't think Hoops does hire boards just yet. Hoops signature boards are twin fin so they're the closest thing to an evil twin.
If he wanted a twin get him a starboard quad to test out for his birthday I reckon. I'd be so stoked.
