Congrats to WA's Darryl Griffiths who won the Free Formula division at his 1st Formula event.
Darryl was rewarded with the latest Blackberry phone.

For us Formula newbies (bought myself one last week) what is the 'Free Formula division'?
Free Formula is best thing that ever happened to Formula racing.
It has really reduced the intimidation factor of racing and larger sails etc.
I'll attach the poster that will give you a good idea.
Basically you can rock up to any event with any equipment that can get you around a reduced length course.
You still get to do the exciting part of the race i.e. start together with the whole fleet, but you don't have to waste all your energy doing the full length course.
This also allows you to try gear before committing to buying.
I will definitely be going back next year. Lots of racing, and lots of fun.
4 races each day was more than enough. Lucky to get some decent wind for a couple of the days too.The free formula meant you did not get left out the back of the main fleet so had plenty of time to get back to the beach between races. Will have to step up and play with the big boys next year thou.
I can recommend it to anyone who wants to get some fun sailing in.
There was over a hundred competitors on the water for the lead up event. ( RSX and Longboards and Formula.)
I will have to start practicing now for next year, who is keen.
Sounds awesome. ![]()
I've just picked up some formula kit Daz, so if you need a training partner I'm keen.
Might even look into next year's event. After a complete fizzer of a season in WA for slalom racing this looks like fun.
Working out my training program now. I will send you a copy. Please note it does include alot of drinking.
and Karaoke
That's it - everyone in WA stock up on Formula / Light wind gear.
That way bloody La Nina might f**k off by next summer!!!
Karaoke....You went to bed before it all began!!!
It was 20 - 25 knots for each race, which is light winds for Big Daz ![]()
Good work Darryl, nice to see your sticking up for the WA guys and winning!!
Will have to join you in the beer drinking part of the training, but Karaoke isnt my strong point ![]()
Sounds like a great social event, with nice weather and location!
Those East coast guys know how to organise a great formula event with conditions to match!
If the conditions look good and you can get a cheap last minute flight, then yell out. We can lend you equipment and the event is right next to the airport. Accommodation will be sorted also....
