I'm heading down to Esperance for the easter weekend, had a look at the forecast and winds look rather feeble so toying with whether I should take kit down or not. Bit of hassle as a few of us going down and space is tight.
Long shot but don't suppose anywhere hires kit around there? Any suggestions welcome!
Also anyone know of decent surf spots for a not so good surfer?!
thanks
Any of the bays west of Esperance are good for a splash.
They vary lots from one day to the next depending on the wind and wave direction, so you really need to just drive around the Twilight Beach road until you find somewhere nice. Both West Beach & Twilight beach are good value. Watch out for rips before you go out see which way they are running so you can paddle out of them when you need to. They are quite strong in places.
If you have a 4WD you should also drive east, out the Wylie Bay road to the coast. From there you can drive along the beach all the way to the Cape Le Grand national park, about 20 Km or more. Hard beach with no big surprises. Not much surf along that part of the beach but it's a really nice drive and very clean water and sand. Well worth the effort.
(Do everyone a favour and drive slow along the beach, otherwise it will join the long list of other fun things which are no longer allowed.)
From there, hop across to Lucky bay, also in the park. Very clean, very pretty and well worth the drive.
There was some kiter dude there a few weeks back looking like he was enjoying it, not so much for the wind conditions but just to be able to kite in such beautiful surroundings.
(I was almost a little bit jealous.
)
I just got back a few weeks ago and enjoyed it heaps.
The water is a bit nippy though so take a wetty if you intend staying in more than half an hour.
{edit} I spose I should have added, if you want to windsurf out the west side it's a huge mission just to get your gear down to the water. There are high cliffs all the way along there.
Wylie bay would be better for that cos you can park on the beach.
I didn't take anything down except my surfboard and in retrospect, that was a good move.
My advice is, ditch the windsurf gear.
Easter is a lovely time to visit Esperance because there is no wind.
Leave the windsurfing gear at home. ![]()
