Anyone sailed around Dunsborough area? I am heading for a week with family start of March
I assume normal sea breeze is blowing pretty offshore?
Any recommendations around this area? Happy with flat water or waves but not sure still built courage up to go out at Margs again.
Thanks
I sail there often as we have family down there we visit.
SW is indeed offshore in the bay, but other wind directions can be really good.
Quindalup is a fabulous spot in winds NW through N to SE. A good spot to launch is on Geographe Bay Road, either side of the junction with Elmore Road. Near the backpacker lodge is a small car park with a bench in front of it, or the other way towards Dunsborough town is a large grass area good for parking and rigging. If the wind is right you will generally see a handfull of kiters and / or windsurfers out there - its a friendly spot. There's a sandbar about 100m out which gets shallow so watch out with your fin. I use multi fin boards there and that helps. In the right conditions the sandbar kicks up a small wave which is fun to jump and mess around on.
In March you may get strong SE winds first thing in the morning. Or, like the coming weekend, a front can drive a day or two of good winds (I am heading there this Thursday to catch the forecast).
If the SW is blowing, dont rule out Yallingup. An awkward launch and recovery across the reef, and you would want to pick a day when the swell is not too big, but in the right condtions it can be a surprisingly easy place to sail. Just dont get caught out there when the wind flicks to southerly late afternoon...
If you are desparate to sail in a SW and Yallingup looks too much, a 50 minute drive just past Busselton onto Forrest Beach Road gets you to a beach that catches the SW cross shore.
The whole Cape Naturaliste area is tricky for wind really but if you pick the right spot it can be really good.
I sail busso all the time. Yes the SW is off shore so you will want to be confident in your gear.
Augusta is goo to on a SE, flat and fast. Had a couple of nice dais inside the sand bank inndunno too.
feel free to contact me when you're looking to go out I am a bit of a free agent now being between jobs.
Cheers Dave

Hi Dave
I am in Capel and are keen on catching up sometime for a sail in Busso.
That should do it.
Either here in the bay or maybe Augusta (+1hr from busso) for flat water.
Here is my number 0413017871
