It's not a Windsurf topic but I thought I try it this way..

As a foreigner I want to buy a campervan in Sydney and sell it in Perth..
What I have to look for?

What is the best, easiest way to get a campervan(I know some pages like gumtree, carmarket sydney?...)? What is greenslip?
Can I take the plate over?
What is a Rego=Registration?
Can I take it over? How can I extend it?
Insurances to make?
Any other tips?

Thank you very much

cheers,..from a swiss windsurfer

WA and NSW have different rules about car licenses, for the initial purchase info you'd be best to post in the NSW section.
And I think to sell the car in WA it may have to be re registered here, which could be expensive.

you can sell it in WA when it still has NSW registration....... but it will be very much de-valued as any buyer will have to get it registered in WA within a few months.

when in perth dont miss out on the free camping in the scarborough / Brighton car park - free showers and campers kitchens provided at the main paths to the beach.

- all we ask is that you keep an eye on our cars in the afternoon when its windy to discourage the local thieves from smashing our windows

I had a friend visit last year, he could not get short term insurance. Just ask for an annual policy which you can pay for monthly then cancel when you sell. Good luck!

Tino,

You can buy a car from anywhere in Australia and drive it to WA, but as said earlier you have to register it within a few months and depending on the age of the vehicle it might involve a mechanical inspection. This link takes you to what you will need to know to do it legally: www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/license-my-vehicle-registration.asp

If you drive a vehicle here when its not properly registered you risk penalties under our laws, usually a fine.

As far as the camping goes...just be aware WA does not have the same laws as Europe when it comes to camping in a vehicle. Yes, you may get away with it, but the councils (and locals) are getting a bit angry at the rubbish left behind - especially urine in plastic bottles.

Unfortunately a group of French Backpackers went on a stealing spree in WA and have pissed off some people this year - see story: www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-australia/french-backpackers-charged-after-stealing-spree/story-e6frg14u-1226078749057

And councils are cracking down on camping in car parks:
tumbrella.com.au/2011/01/14/crackdown-on-sydney-free-camping/

I reckon your best bet is to hire one that you can return to the company in WA.

Avoids any hassles.

Don't want to be a downer... Just want to give you some relevant and fair information to consider.

Cheers

Sean

In NSW, the yearly registration consists of a greenslip which covers injury to third parties, a registration tax, and a 'pink slip' registration check. You will only need the greenslip, the pink slip, and to pay the registration tax, if you renew the registration.

You are supposed to provide a pink slip when selling a car, but the buyer and seller can waive this if they want to.

To transfer a vehicle into your name, you need to pay a stamp duty (tax) on the market value of the vehicle, and then they place the registration in your name. Other than the (optional) pink slip and the stamp duty charges, there is nothing else required to transfer the registration.

You 'should' get a minimum of Third Party insurance, which covers damage to other property/cars. If you don't and damage something, you are liable for the costs.

To renew a NSW registration when it is about to expire requires you to have a pink slip issued from a NSW inspection station, pay the greenslip price, and then pay the registration fee.

If you intend to travel to WA from NSW around this period, unless you want to drive it back to NSW for the inspection, you need to get a pinkslip first. They are valid for 1 month I think, so conceivably you could get it a month before the registration is due and then use it for the renewal.

There are companies that buy and sell cars to travelers like yourselves, and will buy back your vehicle at a set price, but I don't know anymore about them.
