Hi,
I have recently moved to Perth and I'd like to know
if there is any place where I can practice north of The river.
Someone has advised me to try pinnaroo point, but I'd
be glad to find also places further north.
They would be closer to where I live and I could try them
after work.
I have very basic skills, so I am trying to improve my stance and
sailing abilities before trying safely some other place.
Any Advice?
Cheers
There's plenty of ocean and beaches up North of the River mate but Pinnaroo is probably the easiest to get access to. If you are a beginner it might be worth your while heading down to the river until you can gybe competently enough & waterstart etc. They have lessons down there as well in case you wanted to get some tips. :)

Thanks a lot Maddlad.
It sounds good. Anyway, where on the river?
or shall I just google for windsurf schools here in Perth?
Cheers
The last couple times I drove to Pinnaroo there were kiters there but no windsurfer? Do the windsurfers go to the same spot or downwind of the kites?
DDAnilo - I think it will be much easier to learn in the river. As there will be more sandbanks and shallow areas where you can stand, plus there will be no swells and smaller waves. (also the water is not so clear that you can see the grey suits :)
The 2 spots are: Melville (corner Cunningham St and Melville Beach Rd) and Pelican Point (Hackett Drive, Nedlands - JH Abrham reserve).
Thanks GrumpySmurf.
It is a useful information. It might head there during weekends but if
I want to practice after work I need to find something closer to my
place as well.
Anywhere on the coast around Joondalup and Wanneroo would be fine.
I have spotted some kiters at mindarie, but so far nobody with a windsurf...
Yep, Grumpy Smurf is correct about where on the river to go. The light stays around reasonably late in summer so you could finish work and get to the river reasonably quickly if you wanted to DD.
Wish that I could Maddlad. But I either need to carry along with me all my stuff
and leave it unattended while working or to go back home from the CBD, to put
everything on my roof rack and to drive back south.
Given the traffic will take me couple of hours... I could start rigging at around 6.30 PM...
It is not worth the effort for just a few minutes
Hey mate
you might want to take a drive to the pond down in shoalwater bay on the weekends, you can sail between sandbars and is very sheltered... enjoy
I wouldn't bother heading to the river after work if you are finishing work and living up north. Pinneroo is fine. Plenty of people around to help out if you get stuck. Its not that bad, and it won't take long to build your confidence to sail there. The light days don't have much chop and you will enjoy the steadier winds and less travel time, and sets you up better for costal sailing in the future if that's what you want to do. Pinneroo is the most beginner friendly spot in all the northern suburbs, due to the conditions, plus friendly sailors already there to help out if you want
But most importantly, what ever you choose, sail soon, as there are only around 2 months left this season of reliable trades. After that its unpredictable frontal until late sep/oct. So get in the water now.

Thanks NR. I'll definitely go there. I have already sailed with waves, but it was in the Mediterranean sea, where winds are usually weaker and waves smaller. If it's too difficult for me then I'll try the river. but I agree on getting in the water ASAP. :D
