Hi there !!

I'm Gaël, a french student who is coming to Perth in order to work at the Royal Perth Hospital as a trainee for three months.

My flight lands in Perth on 28th of April.

I think that I will take my windsurf board with me and if I can one or two sails !!
I'm thinking about taking my little wave board (AHD Kauli Pro 75) but I've also the choice to take my Fanatic Freewave 88 or my Tabou Freestyle 100 ...
What is your advice ??

Concerning the sails ... 4.2, 4.7 or 5.3 ???

My best discipline is wave (jumping and surfing) ...

And I have an other problem : when I will be landing in Perth I won't have any accomodation in Perth so I'll have to sleep in a backpacker for at least 3 or 4 days !!
During this period I don't know where I can put my boardbag ... do you have any idea (like in a shop for a short time ?? or in one of yours garage if you're ok ??)

My internship in Royal Perth Hspital will allow me to finish every day at 4 pm ... do you think that it's possible to go sailing in scarboro or other spots after work ??

Sorry for all these questions but I really don't know anything about Perth ... and I need a lot of advices !!

PS : If you know a good place to find a flat/share house for me (not too far from the CBD but as close as possible from a windsurf/surf spot !! I'm dreaming about Scarboro !!)

PS2 : if you know someone who is selling his car for a small price I'm your man !!

PS3 : if you have any other advices about the shops, the spots and all about Windsurf/Surf in Perth I would be very happy to read this !!

PS4 : sorry for my english but I'm just a student and learning english is one of the reason for me to come in Perth !!

Thank you very much !!

GOOD MOVE

ALSO BRING THE 88 UNLESS YOU ARE 95KG+

Concerning the sails ... 4.2, 4.7 or 5.3 ???
ALL OF THEM

My best discipline is wave (jumping and surfing) ...

TRY NORTHBRIDGE FOR BACKPACKERS, TRY THE BILLABONG BACKPACKERS, SHOULD BE ABLE TO STORE YOUR GEAR.

My internship in Royal Perth Hspital will allow me to finish every day at 4 pm ... do you think that it's possible to go sailing in scarboro or other spots after work ??
IF YOU RUSH YOU MAYBE BE ABLE TO GET AN HOUR IN, BUT SCARBORO NO GOOD FOR WINTER SAILING

Sorry for all these questions but I really don't know anything about Perth ... and I need a lot of advices !!

SCARBORO BEST IN SUMMER MONTHS,

PS2 : if you know someone who is selling his car for a small price I'm your man !!
TRY LOCAL PAPERS AND BACKPACKERS NOTICE BOARD

PS3 : if you have any other advices about the shops, the spots and all about Windsurf/Surf in Perth I would be very happy to read this !!
WINDFORCE AND SURF AND SAIL ARE THE CLOSEST SHOPS TO RPH, 10 MINS AWAY. THEN YOU HAVE WINDSHACK,2ND WIND,WINDSURF PERTH AND SOS 30 MINS SOUTH

PS4 : sorry for my english but I'm just a student and learning english, it is one of the reason for me to come in Perth !!
YOUR ENGLISH IS VERY GOOD

Thank you very much !!

IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING WITH LEAVING YOUR GEAR I HAVE ROOM, 20 MINUTES DRIVE NORTH OF THE CITY.

Unfortunately it is not often windy around Perth in winter. It was 3 weeks with poor winds, we had a nice sailing day yesterday but that seem to be it... The windy months are November to February!
I wouldn't bother carrying gear if you stay for 3 months of unguaranteed wind and limited time, you are better off renting some when it blows.

We are about to have very little wind now until late May then the storms will hit. The wind starts out NW just before the cold front, then gradually swings to the west and can stay westerly for a half a day or a couple of days depending the weather pattern, it then swings SW and usually starts to die out.
In winter the sand banks at Scarborough are usually all messed up so the place is like a washing machine and the wind will more than likely be too onshore to get out through the shorebreak.
N or NW try Cottesloe, WSW try Leighton or go 1 hour south of Perth, SW or S try Cottesloe.
You will need a board and sails to cover 25 to 35 knts, 18 to 22 knts may happen but they will be rare.
I prefer 2nd wind sailboards 93172916 and Windshack 93365440 they will have plenty of equipment as all the other travellers have gone home and the season has just finished.
If it's windy take the day off dont wait until 4pm.

I disagree Yves, there is wind in Winter, it's not as good or consistent as Summer sure.
It's only storms when they arrive, but last winter I sailed about once a week, in 15 to 35kts. (mainly speed sailing thou)
May is usually fairly quite, but the storms become more frequent in June and July.
Although not classic down the line wave spots, there are some fun places in Winter, like crystals and crazy waves.
The "Dutch Inn" at Cottesloe and Gearie's at Mandurah can provide more hardcore activity.

Ok thank you for your responses !!

I've understand that Scarborough isn't the place to be in winter !!

Even for surf ??
Because I think that I will be in water as soon as the waves will touch the cost !!

So I'm thinking to look for an accomodation somewhere else ...
Cottesloe, or City beach ??
Are they close enough from the CBD for me ??

I'm still hesitating between my 75 or 88 waveboard ...

How much do you weigh????
Normal Winter wind is about 5kt on shore, but in Storms it's usually 20kt - 40kt.
Although in May you may get the odd 15kt day, so which ever one you leave behind, you may wish you had!

Scarboro in Winter is too big, too onshore and too messy, I think you'd be very lucky to be able to get out through the break.

The wave at the dutch inn, breaks on reef, not shifting sand banks, and doesn't have a mean shore break. So I think you'd be better at Cottesloe, I don't think there'd be much difference in journey time to RPH between Scarboro and Cottesloe. I'd guess about 20min to half an hour depending on time of day.

Ok thank you very much !!!

My weight is about 65 kgs (I don't really know ...)

So I think that it will be the 75 !!

And if I need an other board maybe that some shops can rent some gear ??

Thank you for all these advices and I hope that I'll see you on the water !!

I live in Scarborough, and work right next to the hospital, journey time is around 25 minutes if you go the right way

Cottesloe is probably a bit quicker, maybe 20 minutes.

Cripes, 65 kilos? Your 75 will be fine. I normally ride my 80 litre wave board for waves, I weigh 85 kilos... I can't suggest a sail size, not having ever windsurfed when I was 65 kilos

Scarborough is a beach break, so if you catch a wave you get one or two bottom turns before the wave closes out. There are other spots around if you're willing to look though. For windsurfing it's got a vicious shorebreak, be prepared to get worked and look like a beginner Dutch Inn is much more sedate and easier to get going.

You might get a sail in after work if you're quick, but you won't be able to stay out there long. The sun is setting around 6pm at the moment, expect it to set earlier by the time you get here. As Rider5 said, in winter you take the wind when it comes, if it comes in at 9am it might be gone by 4pm.

Good luck, see you on the water

Nebs I suspect you haven't yet seen Scabs in a winter storm, and Dutch Inn is manageable in a Winter storm, I wouldn't call it sedate.
In winter Leighton looks like scabs does in summer.

Yep, I'm 70kg and if I'm using wave sails in winter, it's probably a 4.2 or a 4.7
Also agree about not much good down the line winter wave sailing, but there's still places that can be anything from fun to survival sailing with medium to big waves involved, plenty of jumps as well.

If the wind's that strong, I'm speed sailing these days, but my old 3.7 used to see action most winters.

That could well be the last of the summer seabreezes for this season.
You were very lucky to see it.

Have a look at the "where did that come from thread" in the wave sailing forum. They're Perth guys talking about yesterday's session. I'm not sure where they went out, but you could ask.
