Hi,

My wife and me, both windsurfers and our to kids (3+5y) are coming to WA. It does not seem to be a problem to get our equipment shipped to Perth but to my surprise it seems to be a problem to find a motor home with a roof rack!

How do you guys in Australia surf and travel with your family?

It seems our options are:
1: rent a car with roof rack and book a camping hut or apartment in Geraldton.
2: rent a motor home and put all the surf stuff inside.
3: rent a car with roof rack and rent a camper trailer

I hope you can help us!

Greetings from a nice danish summer with good wind and waves!

Peter

4. Attach a trailer to the motor home.

I think the motor homes don't have roof racks because they are too high to reach.

If you're just planning on going to Geraldton rent some accommodation there.

If you're planning on moving on every couple of days the motor home is the way to go.

It seems the important question is this:

How do you guys in Australia surf and travel with your family?

We have 2 kids and a 4WD with roofrack. Luggage/food/camping gear goes in the back of the vehicle, kayak & boards on top, masts, sails etc in the trailer.

We either camp, stay in cabins at caravan parks or rent a unit/house.

Oh, and with the age of your kids and the potential distances involved, a car DVD player would be a BIG plus.

Same as Windxtasy - except the boards go in the trailer as well (surfski on roof).

We have a dog as well which of course rides with the people. Now that the kids are older they dont want to come so there is more room for everyone.

On a Gnaraloo trip a few years back two of us filled up a 4WD and trailer and slept in tents. But that was becasue we were taking all the food and water.

It does depend a lot on where you are planning to stay.

Pete, take a look in here. Sometimes its easier to purchase, run it while here and on-sell before you go back. Lots of people from over Europe,on holidays follow this trend. For instance the Land-cruiser about 9 adds down on front page is a good example.
This is the camper/caravan section, there are car sections like a station wagon or such like you could use.

Thanks for the answers!

I think the best option as it looks to me now is a car (maybe 4WD) with roof rack + a caravan trailer.
I am a bit sceptical about buying a car for a 2-month period only. Seems you have to pay quiet a lot if you want a reliable car/camper.
Here in Europe you see many motor homes with surf stuff on the roof. But apparently that is not the best option in Australia.
We plan to be around Geraldton most of the time maybe we drive further north too. Gnaraloo is maybe not the best place for two small kids and my wife (she is practicing the power jibe these days). I am sure we will spend some days in Lancelin too.

Do you think we have to book a place for the caravan for jan/feb at a campsite in Geraldton already now? I hope not I would prefer to be a bit flexible.

Greetings Peter

check out sunset caravan park in Geraldton. Great atmosphere at this caravan park and very relaxed with other families/kids. Close to the ocean and only a short drive from shopping in Geraldton and WSing at Corros!

Have a look round the www and I'm sure u can find rentals with roof racks. Alternatively, leave the gear in the car when driving and outside when sleeping (sure you can find a way to lock gear and bags to the car).

Last year most of the caravan parks around Geraldton was not fully booked in December/January. A lot of them said that this was due to the GFC so might be different this year.

I agree Sunset beach caravan park is good for the family, and right on the beach.
They have onsite chalets which are good too.

Sunset Beach is great. A good supermart just down the road so evening meals are not an issue. Sail till the seabreeze drops out then pick up a meal on the way home. Nice scones at the next door bakery as well.

Hopefully wake up late as the kids should be wrecked ,late breakfast, then head back to corros b4 the seabreeze kicks back in.(after midday)

Corros is a great spot and kid friendly if you're staying at sunset.
