was watching the NP 2010 equipment vid and noticed a board that was a swallow tailled with wingers quad. i did some digging and it appears to be the board that quatro built him.
was wondering if anyone knows anymore about it? JP's kauli quad is a pin tail....
does he still use it?
kauli is not in that video?
had a look at his boards when i was in maui. they are pin tails with pretty massive wingers.
Are you suggesting a professional wavesailor is NOT using the same board that is churned out on the production line that you and I buy???

it's just his name on the board. same as pollakow i think the only he sails the boards with his name on them are during the photo shoot
when i saw that board it really grabbed my attention as it is very close to the image i have in my mind of the tail i'd like on my own board. so i was curious if kauli is still using that board or whther he ditched it.

well ok a little bit then.
i don't see what the problem is. it's keith teboul that is losing out here in the long run. kauli takes everything learnt with keith and then develops a board with JP. at the end of the day the kauli quads jp sell are still kauli quads. just tuned for real world conditions. the quatro boards kauli sails are still quatro boards, just developed with keith.
that said, i thought it was general knowledge that keith shapes kauli's boards and general knowledge that keith is the best waveboard shaper around.

-You are shaping boards for a lot of world tour riders sponsored by other board companies, aren't you worried about those brands taking profit of those shapes you do for their team riders?
Most of the boards I shape for pro riders are pretty specific for their needs and really wouldn't make a good board for production. But it is an issue and really what I do is work with each rider specifically and make boards to really suit their needs and work on a program with them. I think the benefit for me in doing different shapes and learning outweighs the information I am giving them but we will see in the future what happens.
i do see your point though. i am almost certain that the board in this photo is the quatro i am talking about. the article inferrs it's a jp. i could be wrong however.

Wave Boards are finally getting so much better since the multi fin revolution that the pro sailors are very keen to get involved with the production boards they represent. They are excited and l believe now the difference might be as simple as 5mm more tail kick preffered between production and a custom. But you do have to look at each prosailors unique style and decide if that is for you or not. Some shapers are very speed orientated so that will always influence their wave boards. It is the apprenticeship you do that influences your goals. Surfing has been mine, and 5 yrs ago l had to justify alot of my ideas continually, now they are reality and l know it is great for the sport.

i may have jumped the gun when i said keith was the best wave board shaper around. i wasn't thinking of stonesurf at that point.

Tiesda asked me two yrs ago my thoughts on quads, and l told him it was a can of worms. l did not have alot to do with them in my surfboards as in the early days they tended to track alot and l thought that the tracking would be exaggerated with the speed of sailboards. l just spent all last season working on quads and the feedback was the guys who rode my thrusters went" Yeah there ok but they do not do this or that". Single fin riders went "wow". For me personally , l loved them, but spent alot of time trying to get the top turn right for me. Controllable drift like a thruster but even more speed out of the turn than a thruster . Loved the bottom turn speed, no matter how much pressure you loaded it up, it ate it up , especially in 30 knots and chop. Spin out was non existant (almost).
Thrusters are now a safe bet for me, easily fine tuned .Quads have an x factor, great through the bottom turn and grippy through the foam. Can you imagine turning through the top turn as hard as you can and the board doing the turn with no compromise, no slide. Quads, thrusters are all about more lift from the added fins. Leverage off the front fin to rear fin provide more drive out of the turn so more tail rocker can be added, more surfboard like. No need for tail concaves or swallows as the fins are doing all this work. To add these extra's just adds to the tracking problems that scares people off by the board being unpredictable. Scary thought on a sailboards when your hammering on a decent wave.
l am riding all quad surfboards at present and could not believe how much fun my keel quad was yesterday. l will nip out into the shed and create a keel quad sailboard soon.
Why? Because l can.

A surfboard shaper told me the quad was only possible because of the modern rocker and concaves.

Those singles look so sluggish and tight and really lack speed off the bottom - look like sailing on valium compared to the speed of the multi fins - when you put them almost one after the other it really stands out.
