IMO, 0:35 is the most impressive move...
Never seen a stalled nose landing from such height...
Rad...
I agree with Mucksy about the nose dive. Not that it was particularly high or impressive, and he got a little out of shape, probably because it's blowing so hard, but I haven't seen one for years, good to see. I've asked before and never got an explanation: why don't people do them anymore? A big nose dive is one of the most fun maneuvers there is.
And kudos for the cheeseroll, and even an old Naish-style gybe onto the wave then backwind ride (or slam judging by the edit). Old school ![]()
It's been nearly a week and not a single reply to help with the mystery of the disappearance of the nose dive jump (apart from poor Mr Red Thumb who I can only assume is embarrassed about not being able to do them
).
It's a mystery to me because they used to be common and now they're rare, both locally and among the pros. But unless you loop every time you jump (no thanks), what other options are there? Landing tail first always makes me feel like a gumby, except for on the very highest jumps I can do, so that leaves tabletops (fun) and nose dives.
I'll make it easy for everyone, all you have to do is give the letter that applies to you. I'm referring especially to the highish jump with steep landing, more so than the shallower one where you plane immediately on landing, though even they seem to have been replaced by those who "put the landing gear down early."
A. I do them.
B. I used to do them but no more.
C. I don't do them.
If you want to give reasons please do, and you could say what other jumps you do e.g. "I do all the loops."

From my memory, nose first landings were the standard back in the days of fibreglass boards, the main reason being that they were better than tail first landing because you could get back on the plane quicker as you continue heading out through the waves.
Modern kit planes much quicker than the old stuff, and as a result, tail first landing became the standard.
Cheers
I'd say not many people do them because they are sketchy as hell!! When doing nose first landing it's a small miss sheet in/out to either a full on flat land or a half baked loop. It was a bit different back in the day when boards were long and the distance between the footstraps and the mast track was also long, there is a lot more room for error. On today's boards where they are super short and that gap is typically small the margin for error is tiny.
I'm on a one man quest to bring back the cheese roll though, I bust them all the time! Such a fun move and much easier to control than a loop when way overpowered ![]()
I'm with Mucksy and Wendell.
Except Wendell missed an option
D - I can't do them but want to.
Trying to learn back loops has taught me one thing - you need to be able to land nose first
The cheese roll never went away junior![]()
You're the only other person I've ever seen them do them Dan
old school is the new new school amirite!! ![]()
Good work guys, a whole two of you managed to come up with the single letter response to my survey. (Make sure you red thumb me good for pointing out your failings - aaahhh, I can feel their soothing glow from here.)
I'm still not much the wiser about the demise of the nose landing. I don't have enough experience of super short boards to say for sure that isn't a factor, but I'm doubtful. My board is 7'11"/242cm and it's no harder to nose land than my old 8'6"ers. Anyway nose landings disappeared well before boards shrunk. Same with cheeserolls - I think it's largely fashion. As for the coming off the plane theory, if you come down steeply either nose or tail first you'll stop planing.
I'm a "A".
When I learn't in the late 80s it was how everyone tried to land their jumps for a few of reasons:
- the landing is much softer on the knees
- you sail away on the plane
- it looks really cool
Long live table tops and nose landings
I'm just stoked to land.
Wether it's on the nose, tail or face first isn't a conscious decision for me.
wow he is truly a weapon on the wave,
and i feel a couple of cheese rolls coming on this arvo if its windy enough ![]()

Peto, since D is I can't do them but want to (thanks batstonem), you should care more than anyone. I'll give you some tips next time I see you. Another good thing about nose firsts is, unlike most loops, you don't pass the point of no return immediately, instead you can work your way into them with small jumps and shallower angles.
Tips from you haha can't wait. But you won't see me for a while as I have a stuffed knee.
"unlike most loops". Are you talking from experience or just assuming. Haven't seen you loop.
Nose first, yeeeew!
Why so negative? And why wouldn't you want tips from a better sailor than yourself?
Plenty of experience, not that it's relevant, because you don't need any to know about the point of no return - obviously the only loop out of the main four that can be eased into somewhat is the backloop.
Haha trust me Pete I do seek tips from sailors better than myself and more importantly, sailors I rate. That means I won't be seeking tips from you. And I'm not being negative, you're being sensitive. Anyway that will do. There are bigger issues in the world than nose first landings and who is a better sailor than someone else. See ya. Merry Xmas.
I've never been told I don't rate before! But the only relevant thing as far as taking tips is I'm better at the maneuver in question. Anyhow I'm sure you'll be better behaved when we next meet in person. Merry Xmas to you (and all your aliases
)
P.S. I wouldn't be so rude as to rate you publicly (even now!), but I believe my contest record is considerably better than yours ![]()
Firstly no one jumps up the coast, not enough wind, so no point debating landings.
Secondly what comp results?? Haven't seen you guys at a comp? Maybe you should come to the next one and sort this out! Not sure how well a nose first landing gets scored, might depend on the age of the judges....
My comps were probably before your time DunkO.
If I may now get back on topic, I got a laugh out of this:

It's all high quality freestyle, then at 4:04 we have a small jump, drops the nose, looking good .....
