Thumbs Up

Hello everybody,

I was wondering if anybody has an opinion on the severne white line rdm's? I have a quiver of severne wave sails and am looking to get a spare mast and I found a new one for a bargain. I know it will be heavier and not perform as well, since its strictly a spare thats less of a concern. What I am concerned about is how solid are they? I don't mind a compromise in performance but I don't want to have to think twice about going out in mast high waves because of my mast.. Any thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Tom

Fully agree with pilchard.
Spend the extra money and get the Gorilla.

I actually suggest spend even more still and get the Severne 90% RDM.
They are awesome.
Quite a light weight mast but very strong.

I would only consider the white line RDM if I had one sail I hardly ever used, and it rigged on a 370.
The white line has really quite a thick wall thickness thus the extra weight.
Hence the swing weight on a 400 in my view would be way too much to make sailing enjoyable.

I would say it must be quite a strong mast with that wall thickness but I have never used one and don't know of anyone that has.

It would only be as a spare 370 as all but 4/5 of my sails rig on that size mast and I do not want to be stuck if my primary mast snaps on me.. . I emailed severne about it and this is the response I got...

"Hi Tom, The WhiteLine is not a mast we really pushed hard, it's there because we often have distributors in Europe and a few shops in Australia who see a small market for cheap, entry level masts. The target market is customers after entry level gear on a budget. When they've broken, they don't break like the Gorilla's or RD90's, so in all honesty, I don't think they have better durability than the Gorilla mast. How about keeping an eye out for a second hand mast instead?"

Quick to respond and honest which I think we can all value.. But as I suspected, maybe not the best choice for what I want to do.. The price of new gear for us in Canada has just jumped like crazy with the USD/CAD exchange rate bringing up a gorilla to aprox 850$ ! I found a new whiteline rdm 370 for sub 200$, I guess I am just wondering if I am asking for trouble using it in waves if my primary mast breaks?
