After a frustrating sail with buckets of ribbon weed last night - just wondering does anyone know of a good wave weed fin that would to suit a JP 99 thruster - the 23cm Ultra fin design seems to be a weed magnet and the long thin strips won't even come with chop hops or decent jumps.
be interested in ya thoughts - every year I say - I must get one and never do.
A weird thing russ is that on wed night i sail @ seacliff, a spot you love, and others were complaing about weed before I hits the water. I am thinking "on no", my jp quad is going to suck with all those fins to catch weed BUT;
I didnt have a problem at all. It must be the rake angle of the fins and the fact they are smaller. Every know and then i caught a bit but it seem to slip off straight away.
So the moral of my story is, maybe you dont need a full on weed fins for your JP 99 thruster, maybe just a standard set with more rake.
Yeah must say I never had the problem with my twinnie
The thrusters are a really straight centre fin - will try the MFC 23 I've got. Funny how Weds night not a bit of weed anywhere - last night buckets of the crap after 24 hours of strong wind - was pretty clear out on the back reef - but you had to jump off ya board to clear your fin on the way out in "drop off territory" - rather sharkey / spookey out there
The trouble with weedies in wave boards is they move the centre of lateral resistance back - same as moving a single fin back - so they become much less loose. Good weedies appararently less so, but I've never used one.
Consider though that on a thruster your centre of lateral resistance is already forward a bit as you have those extra two fins farther forward, so a weedy may not kill your top turns so bad.
Apparently the old fella from rec.windsurfing called Wardog makes awesome fins. Have a google for the wardog wave and wardog weed wave or something - the seppo's rave about them
Love my weed fins.
The blue ones in the pic are wardog ones that I bought 6 or 7 years ago I chopped em down a bit and used them as large twins when I weighed a bit heavier, for use with 5.7 and 6.2
The other ones are fins that I designed and got made up. I was fed up with a well known international brand catching weed and having two meant twice as much weed, they're not super weedy but have just enough angle to get rid or that ribbon weed. If I go through really thick black lumpy weed at slow speed then they catch.
Yeah with weedies you just have to move them a bit further forward in the box.
Rider, we want to know too... my select fins just seem to attract the stuff like there's no tomorrow.
About the only solution I've found is to drop off the plane, push the tail of the board downwind and slide the board backwards for a metre or two, then get going again...
A decent wave weedy would make life so much easier.
I got a MFC wave weed for super weedy conditions. The fin looks rediculous, and by sight alone you would probably think twice about using it. But, it really is fine. You can barely tell that its a weedy at all. For bump and jump conditions, I would go as far as that you won't be able to tell the difference, except, you aren't catching weed. Worth checking out. It does look silly, but don't worry about it, when its weedy, you will planning and glad you had it.
Edit to above.
Although on one of my wave boards, it felt horrible. The one it worked fine on was an older style pin tail and allowed for a further forward fin position. Might be worth checking how the fin fits in first. If its out and out wave riding though, I am not sure if the fin will be that good (again based mainly on how silly it looks). Luckily I haven't had to try the weedy in wave riding, and can only give a good opinion on it based around jumping.
There is also a MFU san carlos which may be worth checking out.
I use a JP 26 weed wave fin when it is very weedy, which is a lot of the time, otherwise a standard JP 26 wave fin is generally a bit looser in the waves. The weedy is really very good and gives the board more straight line stability but sacrifices in the other area. (Good with the 5.9m and 5.3m sails). When using a 4.7m I go to the 23 wave fin as the 26 weedy is too big.
Would prefer to use the standard wave fin, but when the wind is onshore there is usually a lot of weed closer in. The standard wave fin will not drop off the weed so it can become annoying until you get a bit further out.
Just be careful when you lift the board out and carry it all up the beach as the weed fin does go past the end of the board and it can nick you. Blood in the water is not a good look.![]()
Generally, if you can afford one, it is worth the investment. ![]()
I have a friend(business man) who started a fin company with a partner (Engineer) and last year I ordered a freestyle weed from them named the Naia, without any expectation of such a fin..I mean a freestyle weed. Well, it was just the best piece of equipment I bought since a long time ago!! I will try those one this summer on my trip home(weed and Wave spot combo) www.makanifins.com/collections/windsurfing-weed-fins/products/mano-weed-wave-windsurfing-fin
They are not selling fins in Australia so far, but I think they want to sometime, they did a great job so far, you will probably hear from them soon.
cheers.
They also come to a nice conclusion of how a blade weed is killing the feeling of a fsw.
