Vietnam has one of the most reliable wind schedules in the world from November till March. Not to many know. We not talking about Mui Ne, there's 600 to 800km sailable, water temp from 23°C, flat lagoons, 30 different wave spot. Have a look to the windguru links integrated in the website. They get two seasons... winter monsoon (November till March) and summer trades (May till August). Winter monsoon tend to get more wind and bring some swell. The main sailing spots stretch from all the way in the South to just North of Danang. Winter monsoon usually blows from the NEish... summer trades the oposite direction.
While I lived in Singapore we went over to Vietnam a couple of times for general family holidays. Both times in the November to March period. And both times there was plenty of wind and waves even further North around Danang / Lang Co. It's generally still relatively cheap in Vietnam and flights there are reasonable. From Singapore flights were ultra cheap.
However there are a couple of points to consider that actually made it cheaper to fly to WA for windsurfing then to go to Vietnam.
Firstly, foreigners can't drive there unless they have a local license. That means if you rent a car it comes with a driver. Alternatively you can hire a van. Secondly Australian passport holders need a Visa. You can get it on arrival but the lines for that can be very long. Rates can vary from US$35 to US$135. I still don't understand how the prices for a visa can vary that much. The Vietnamese embassy in Singapore charged a flat US$135. If you have a British, German, French, Spanish or Italian passport you don't require a visa for up to 15 days but this rule can change any time. Mui Ne is several hours North of Ho Chi Minh City. Depending on departure and arrival time you might have to add a night at the beginning and end of your holiday.
Vietnam could be an awesome wind and kitesurfing destination. But the logistics currently make it more difficult than it has to be.
One more thing to add is that it seems to be a common believe amongst people in the region that it's ok to dump you garbage into the ocean. The result is a flood of garbage being washed up on the beach. The problem doesn't seem to be as bad in Vietnam as it is further South around Malaysia.
Visas are very cheap and easy to do on line vietnamvisa.govt.vn/apply-online/ I'm fairly sure you must have it before going, big hassle if not. I've been twice and love Vietnam, awesome people and the food is both very cheap and great. I wasn't there for the windsurfing just a month holiday. We used cars, buses, trains and planes over there, some of it great and some was torture, all cheap and part of the adventure.
Now I did have a quick sail in Mui Ne, I was told before hand (March) by tourist info in Ho Chi Minh there'd be no wind but it was howling. As stehsegler said the ocean is a dump, swimming through garbage to get my gear (they insisted on sailing it out first
) was horrible
No doubt others have had it different in Mui Ne. I think Vietnam's great for a holiday and if looking for a sail do some research, places like in the first post might be a lot better ?
Going in December for two weeks. Based at Mui Ne but hoping to get to some of the proper wave spots. Will post stuff during trip. Hopefully these guys can help!
If you can ride a motorbike (or even if you can't) I thoroughly recommend a day with Panda Enduro Tours based in Mui Ne on a no wind day, or if you just need a break from the post-apocalyptic launch and recovery at Mui Ne. Full Moon Village round the corner from the main Mui Ne drag is worth a visit for a nice sandy beach with clean launch, although the wind is likely to be onshore there in December. Watch out for the fishing nets there too, not such an issue if wind is onshore.
Vietnam is a fabulous place, I spent half my year in Ho Chi Minh City working - if you can fit in a night or two in Ho Chi Minh it's well worth it - so much going on there.
