Hi,
Going to upgrade my wave line. I'm 90 kg, sailing only onshore in small waves 0,5 to 1,5 metres approx, no down-the line whatsoever ...just enjoying my rather crappy home spot. My level is basically noob...some small jumps, maybe opting for forward this season if the force is with me, wanting to do some wave riding with the small conditions my home spot can deliver. Mainly on 95 liter fsw board but going to change to a multifin wave board like Simmer Quantum. Starting to think 150 litres and 90 litres would be a nice combo....whatever.
I have the option to buy Simmer Blacktips new from 2020 or used Superheroes from 2020. I'm no expert but I figure Superhero as a sail is better for me since I'm a bit heavy and usually slow at getting up to plane. The used Superheroes are 75 AUSD cheaper per sail but they are used (two previous owners but in good condition). Do any clever person have some tips for me regarding choice of sail I'd be very grateful :). It's a small market here so I can't be very picky about brand.
Br,
Mat
Make sure what ever you buy you have a good mast to match the sails, especially the routine, they are quite mast specific.
Both sails are good quality and build and shape.
Both sails are good. I'd say durability in favor of simmer. I thought I read that the black tip could be better on terms of performance maybe a bit more rounded than superhero possibly flatter. Can use some confirming though.
Hi, I spoke to a heavy wight and he recommended Icon for my weight and level...not really wave riding...more turning and bump&jump. I'll go with power wave sails :). Of course corrects masts.
I used to think that too- then was told you can only have one sail in your hands at any given time so does it matter if you are on a 5m 'power' wave sail or on a 5.2 flatter less powerful sail? I stopped buying 'power' wave sails at that point and have had just as much fun on a variety of normal wave sails.
Heavyweights need stability as they probably use the sail at the upper on of its wind range so 5 batten preferred, and durability comes into it also as you are loading the sail more.
Lots of +190 kg wave riders prefer light feeling wave sails.
Conversely, lots of lightweights..Naish..prefer heavy, grunty wave sails.
Hey DasM,
I've got a bunch of newer 2020/2021 SuperHeros. They feel really well balanced and have a wind range like no other sail I've used before. Really good bottom end, but seem to have a very high top end. Don't backwind when massively overpowered either. I'm only 70 kg and scrawny and tend to get 'rag dolled' in ballistic conditions.
Haven't sailed a blacktip so can't compare.

Thought the Yanks were a bit on the large side but 190 KG, thats a few too many pies if you ask me.
