Just read the old post by Al, was woundering if some one can tell me the best time of year to travel to Punts San Carlos, looking to 3 week holiday next year. What strength wind / waves, is the the best seasion, any other information, would be great from those that have been.
I checked their web site but justed wanted someone (Al) who's been there and could give me their prospective.
I did a Solosports trip about 15 years ago, from memory I went in May. It was windy everyday but we got no swell until the last day. Water was very cold. I think the best time is Sept/Oct as both the water and air temp are higher and a better chance of swell.
I definitely recommend it, and by the look of their website it's gone 5 star now, when I went it was well catered for but a bit more basic.
I've spent a couple of months in Baja a few years ago touring from spot to spot.
Up North (Punta San Carlos area) is generally best April / May as Rob said. September / October can also be good. Although some locals in San Diego recon it can rain quite a bit at that time. Don't know how true that is. I guess it's mainly due to the possibility of getting hit by the tail end of a hurricane.
Further South and in particular the Sea of Cortez side tend to be better around December through to Feb. The wind further South is apparently influenced by El Nino and La Nina weather patterns.
My recommendation would be look at when Solo sports is heavily booked or even better send them an email and ask what time they would recommend. It's a fun place but the water it a bit cold.
If you fly in via San Diego check out the beaches around La'hoya. There is some good search to be had. Also the beach just North of Mission Beach (can't remember what it was called) can be a good wave sailing location.
I was there just after al had 8 days in May and only got two days of wind and not much swell. got skunked out from the low pressure that moved to far south or something. the wind came back with vengenance the day I had to drive back to san diego.
south swells are the best. we got a nw which was a short period. take a surfboard. seek and ye shall find there are waves elsewhere there but they wont tell you about them.
the camp is ridiculously good and everything is fully catered.
that time of year I was fine in a 3/2 wettie and I hate the cold with a passion.

yeah... beats ****ing behind a cactus which is what it was like when I went. Actually wouldn't going back now that they have a few more creature comforts.
It is the kind of place where you could get pretty badly done over if you only go for a week. Solosports guests arrive and leave on Saturdays so if the weather systems are not in your favour you can miss two sweet days while in transit.
When I was there the swell didn't really get below head high most of the time and the wind would come in for 4 days or so then back off for a couple before repeating.
I spent two weeks there in August this year. We got 11 out of 14 days of wind and enough swell. The wind is variable. Mostly on the lighter side. I also went 3 years ago in August for 1 week and sailed everyday with lots of swell. The place is awesome with so much to do if it is not windy, plenty of surfing and supping! If you fly in you can sail on the Saturday you arrive and the Saturday you leave if it is windy!
