Is anyone able to give me the dates for the NSW Wavesailing comps 2010-2011? The first two are on the website calendar, but wondering if there's one in November as I need to commit to something else and don't want a clash!
The 20/21 Nov at Gerroa, south of Wollongong, will prob be the dates as they always have it before the Mambo at Merimbula, which is usually thur 25 - sun 28. Im not sure if this will be the only November comp though.

NSWWA is offering discounted early season registration, with an added incentive of going in the draw for a Neil Pryde wave harness
Last season was a great success with strong attendance at all events (regardless of the forecast), with enough waves and wind to get results in 4 of 5 events.

Only 3 official event results will count towards the 2010-11 season to determine overall placings.

Thanks for putting this up. Only a few months to go now....
It would be great to see everyone again and the Pros division looks to be a lot more contestable with only 3 events counting. Some new blood in the Pros division are really going to give the current guys a run for their money.
We are also going to trial a contest format to improve the quality of man on man judging, reduce the stress of trying to judge large heats, maximise water time and give competitors a second chance to get into a final.

I'm looking forward to trying some of the new demo gear to graduate from my 1982 model Bombora Antartica (the one with a rope universal).

Further clarification and so that it's clear for all the prospective Pros. 3 events count so you can drop 2 bad results including if you miss an event.
Hopefully we will see this division really show an outstanding level of sailing with a very high level competitiveness that will inspire all the other divisions.

Windwarrior, as you have already stated there are indeed areas between Cronulla and Woopi that could host a wavesailing competition. The members of the NSWWA voted two years ago in favour of removing Birubi from the events calendar. This was done for a number of reasons which include, no lifesavers/rescue craft (needed for insurance at some events), no wind for the last three years and ultimately it was deemed unsafe for the juniors, women and a lot of the amateurs coming out of hibernation. Yes, it was too hardcore for some people...
The NSWWA is run and attended by dedicated wavesailors who enjoy competing with like minded individuals followed by a good social. It is foremost an association to encourage people to the best division of windsurfing - wavesailing. Birubi/Toowon Bay were therefore deemed unsuitable.
If I remember correctly we actually got a competition in at Gerroa last year in a NE'r!

I rallied hard for barubi to be kept on the calendar kev. Last comp there was mast high and 25kts. Had a great sail but Not many Assoc members waned to go out, and no locals even showed up!! I found it hard to argue at the case at the agm against those 2 facts.

I remeber, I rallied hardest to get rid of Birubi, but more specificaly the winter comp who the hell wants to sail a comp in the middle of august (Bloody Dan screwed up my plans completely with his keep Birubi support

I think if more people from areas north of sydney attended comps and voluntered in the series then there would be a much better chance of getting a a comp back up there again. I remember in my last year as pres I spoke to Peto about possible locations near newcastle for a comp and some good ones were brought up, however I then decided not to continue as pres so I didn't bother bringing in the extra hassle of a new location for an event to the AGM (the AGM is hard enough as it is
)
I think an event somewhere between the central coast and the mid north coast would be really good, however I doubt this will happen without the help from someone in that area to really push it to make it happen! I would definately offer my support if anyone were to bring this idea back up again.

This has been suggested a few time already, maybe the "new south south and far north wales wave sailing association" as we cant forget Woolgoolga.
I enjoy sailing new spots and would support an alternative venue around Newcastle, Central coast. My first comp was at Halliday's Point! All this gets decided at the AGM so feel free to present your case in that forum.
Something to consider though is the increased reponsibility put on the club to provide a safe venue & event with a higher level of rescue support than previous years. Without support from local council, NSW Maritime, NSW Marine parks, National Parks (in the case of Birubi) all insurance cover is void and the potential consequences very serious. Rising insurance premiums owing to increased percieved risk can be a real threat. At present we can offer 5 events, a teams event, t-shirt, insurance, BBQ's and prizes for an early bird discount of $130. We have not increased this price since I have been a member.
In addition, each event usually requires multiple pages of documentation for approvals, legal compliance, risk assessment + fees. There also needs to be suitable accommodation available, a venue for presentation and even things to cater for wives, girlfriends, kids, babies.
Much effort last year and this year has gone into streamlining organisation, efficiency and catering for your average sailor as well as the kids. Happy to change in the future, however, getting the details right has been a priority recently.
Don't worry about flame suits - I do listen to all suggestions! It might be better to PM if there are other queries.

Just thinking... if I read people's comments correctly there really seem to be two different camps here:
A) Everyone interested in the general social aspect of the NSW Wavesailing Association and the idea of getting young blood involved in the sport and having a general fun weekend which also involves sailing in some waves if they are around.
B) The more "serious" wave sailors interested in getting out in "real waves" and more challenging conditions.
We all know that timing a comp around camp B) is a little more tricky than camp A). However, perhaps it could be worth while running a poll to gage interest in a once per year East Coast comp run on a standby basis similar to what they do with the Redbull Big Days comp in Germany.
The advantage of this is that the comp only runs if there the conditions are right resulting in decent opportunities for media coverage as well as showing East Coast conditions off at their best.
If you ever actually got your fat ass to a comp sludger you would know the have a poll once a year already, they call it the agm. Secondly both camp A and camp b are both in the same caravan park, camp A just decided to do something else they find fun eg surf, sug, or drink beer together when it's not sailable. As opposed to moan in the carpark about the conditions.

I think you've summed it up rather well - there are two camps. I guess an issue is that there aren't many of the "hardcore only" brigade turning up at the events or AGM's so they don't get much of a say.
As for a roving comp - Birubi for example has about four different Agencies/Groups/Councils that need to let us use their beach for a comp. I don't know how we could do a comp at any beach in NSW on any weekend?
Considering that newcastle only gets windy once a year, Gerroa has no waves and all the sydney windsurfers are gay, all the events should be held at Warilla!
The Sydney guys would love it cause there's already a strong gay windsurfing scene down there.
The biggest decision you'll have now while your sitting on your deck is whether to put down the cupcake or the beer to free up a hand for the rock chuckin. Have fun down there over winter Tommy. Haha
I think Hallidays Point is a great option as you can sail NE or S - Sw on the other side of rocky outcrop. Remember that comp a few years back it went off.
And yes this is a comment from a person who is keen to do some comps this year. And no I have not attended an AGM in a while...
