I just got hold of a BG Surf 9'6" Sup. I bought it for 3 reasons: -teach the kids and girlfriend to sail - give my abs a chance to resurface after many years hidden - for me to have something to muck around on when it's too light even for kiting on surfboards.
I had 4 wobbly paddles on it last week, and it is exhausting even in 1ft waves.
A bodgey NW swung around to a 10knt NE on the weekend, so I headed to the a north corner lefthander (2-3ft) that is usually way too gusty/shadowy to kite, let alone sail. I put up a 5.5Ezzy and spent the next 2-3 hours full-on loving what feels like a brand new sport.
Having no straps was essential to get the board working effectively.
I can't wait for the next southerly to get out to more locations that have been off the menu so far.
How many people are sailing sups?

I've SUP wavesailed the bar at Merimbula in light wind times at the Mambo.
You're right - it's surprisingly fun and no straps are key. You have to move around a bit more to get pressure on the rails, but good turns are certainly still possible if dynamic with the feet. Sup wavesailing would be ideal for long point breaks that get gusty on the inside - would've been good in the Currumbin alley at the nats a few years back.

Yep got one for the same reasons,

I took one down to Gerroa last w/end, had a blast. Also a 9'6 with a 5.3.
Good fun in small waves before the n/e str came in. Then a whole lot more fun when it did.
Def. an alternative when the wind is light and the smaller sup's are very easy to throw around in the waves, practicing heli's etc.
Don't know about you but could hardly walk the next day. My thighs were r/s from sup ing. J

Did you find a BG with a mast track? how much?

I bought a budget chinese model SUP and put one in myself,

as you said it rejuvenates the windsurf buzz ... and we get more time on the water

I may be in the market for a SUP in a few months and am torn between 10' plus (beginner, 90kg, I found a 10'6" x 31 difficult) or shorter to use with windsurf rig also
.........Plus I can't believe after being out for years, the only secondhand ones on this site are all still $800 plus (surely somebdy has a dinged up one?).....

Interested to hear about the cheapo chines jobs?

hey mark..

look for a board in the 9 - 10 ft range.... about the 150 literage mark and 30 wide...

this should do ALL kinds of paddle surf from inch high to double.

over 10 ft will be easier to learn on , but you'll outgrow it in a flash, you want a board that is a challenging to start with,(( it's 1000 times easier to learn than WS.... ))

also in my experience 10ft+ boards are a bit too BIG for sup wave sailing,, you want to go to the back of the board to turn, but u cant because the rig is too far away!

You'll eventually find that the paddling part is MUCH better than the windsurfing part!

I'd avoid the cheapo ebay chinese boards....

Have a look at the buy sell WA SUPBOARDS,, most of the equipment is ex demo/ or new for 1000-1400!!! .... when you compare to windsurf prices thats 1000 cheaper,, plus they hold their value a lot better...(expect to sell your board 3 yrs down the line for 400 less than what u paid)...

If you get a chance pop into ozzy park, they've got a heap of demos, very helpful crew down there.

I ve got JP 9'3. I am 76kg.
Have had loads of fun sup and wavesailing.
Have had a go on a mates smaller board suping, easier to turn but lots more work and not so much fun when crappy waves. The Jp is plenty big enough for me, could even be a touch smaller.
Wavesailing has been really interesting, as mentioned really got to move around on the board, but can be rewarding and put a smile on your face.
Have found tricky if a little bit on shore, best cross off.

Best insurance policy you could buy!

hi Tex,
the lady got her 10'6" Naish Nalu at xmas and after testing it in vallas deep creek a 6knot se made the water surface a bit too bumpy for paddling so we rigged the 6.1m ghost lightweight maui sail on it, and presto, sailing backside on the little ripple waves in the creek entrance was fun. Just need to have the uphaul on and watch out for dings in the waves as these things are not as robust as normal wave boards [yet].
See you out there.

got a 9'6 on the way Andos. can't wait Will use it as a stand up board when there is no wind but also as a light wind wave board when the wind is too light for my 79L wave board. Means I will definitely get on the water for a bit of fun no matter what the wind is doing.

Can't wait for this weekend x-off tomorrow morn, and I'm guaranteed to get some waves, go for a drive Windanza.
I got the 9'6" BG SURF because it is atleast designed in Oz, was pretty cheap, and has a double layer of carbon on top. This puts some extra weight but I knew that my first board would get worked.
They come with a mast track.
Is anyone using old style soft sails like Gaastra Powerfoil or Wavefoil with half battens? if anyone has an old 5.5m with no battens to crack around I am interested. I chucked out exactly that last year.
Hope you all have a windy weekend.

driving miss lazy. Tex like you i dont like wasting 90mins hiway hopping on a promise.
if it was/is good and the bom obs are not telling us what is really happening at flatties. then if i dont do the eyeball on the spot i will never know whether it was an epic session. but the rain did hit L.O.W. and the night wind was a tease. as its been all over the shop like a MWB during the day in this sector. squalling, up and down and changing directions, as transeasonal weather systems can sometimes do.
its sse here and gusting up then dropping, doing the tease again today. i hope its good there and i dont have a clew.
i love it though when we post lame dozy docile pix of what we call fun on this coast, then the west oz chargers post some recent session that just blows everything out of the water. ie the new pix of Pottsy/McK/n others in offshore looking conditions yesterday, but just epic action.
