After about three seasons, my current W-H fin has recently developed a slight hum, although only on the occasional bottom turn. Any suggestions.
Is the "slight hum" actually a "slight gwaf" exclaimed by passers by before you go out ....?
Looks like it's somewhere in the "slighlty f#cked" range plus noticing the slot it's probably 15 - 20 years old. Time to retire the old boy and insert a fresh foil - without a slot.
AB...
Throw it in the bin...or if no bin is available donate it to a museum, They might use it as a ......
......well something?
Hello Mr surfresearch knowing that board well I'd say there's a screw loose there somewhere
. ( Your doing very well sailing that setup by the way. )
I think I recognize that fin. Was it at gerroa on Monday? If not then it has an evil twin. Good on you for getting the most out of your gear. I still use my 25 year old slotted torquay and reshape the top when she gets flat. There's no reason to bin a good effective fin. Just fix the problem of finbuzz by resharpening the tip. Not all windsurfers can afford to buy new gear and will battle on with what we have.
Its still a perfect fin for Wave/Slalom - Look, is says so on the fin. When you have worn it down so it only says Wave/, stop using it for slalom.. ![]()

p.s. the hum could be the song of the fins spirit being released back to the Ocean and returning to Hawaii
Thanks guys for all the creative feedback.
Following the post, I have been generously supplied with an alternate fin.
Another SH Wave-Slalom 9.5, but, as recommended by Big Al, un-slotted (non-slotted? slot-less?).
With only a minimal amount of sanding (thanks ManOverBoard), I was able to quickly make it into a wave fin:
The suggestion by jh2703 (donate it to a museum) was inspired- I rang the curator of my local Sailboarding Museum and they were pleased to add it to their small, but growing, collection.
My S-H is in the top right corner.

I can see a sock fin in that photo. I used to have a sock fin, came on the South pac. But none of them matches the fin I had a loan of at Lake Illawarra yesterday for bizarreness. Looks a bit like a BBQ hot plate, stainless steel leading edge. It worked very well, just as well when I got upwind out of the mud and into the water.
