Hi

Anyone tried both of these care to feedback?

Ive got an 07 evo 80 and love it, but looking at also getting something a bit bigger as well to give me that little bit more float when its marginal on the inside (im a little over 80kgs).

What would the 100 realistically offer me over the 90...Ive noticed from the specs its looks look a similar planshape, so im guessing the 100 is essentially a thicker / corkier version which although adding to the feel of bouyancy will make it a LOT more cumbersome riding at my weight?

Is it fair to say that the 100 is more aimed at a proper heavyweight (ie 95Kg) and if im looking for a schlogging & riding tool then 90 would be nearer the money?

PS
Also thinking of getting a evo 70 if i can - or maybe evil twin 80 if it will provide more control in high winds over the 80 ive already got.

Cheers all - any feedback much appreciated - good wind and waves to all!

Hi Northy, I'm using a 90 ltr EVO at 85kg's. I find these higher ltr boards do offer more float but don't give you earlier planing. A bit like the Kombats they are built for rider weight rather than higher or lower wind strengths in the larger sizes. Having said that I haven't tried a 100ltr or even seen one yet. I used to have a Kombat 86 and 105. The only difference was float. The 105 gave me no benefit over the 86 in terms of early planning. Using a 5.4 we tested it by swapping boards in marginal conditions a couple of times. The smaller board just went faster once going.
The Evo 90 to me feels the same. Hope that helps.

Not sure if it's any help but I'm around 92Kg's + wetsuit etc and I can float around on a 92 Evo reasonably well and it's more corky than my 98 fanatic freewave - the Evo is way slower to plane but a better wave ridng board - not that we've been getting too many good cross off's lately.

I was planning on getting rid of the Evo but it is just so much fun in well powered wave conditions

I use my 92 as my high wind board (4.2M but that doesn't happen that often) and I'm sure I could sail it with a 6.4 like the freewave..

I am still slightly heavy footed so for someone of 80Kgs the 90 should be ideal

Thanks guys - much appreciated / seems to confirm my thoughts - think the 90 would make most sense!

I have the 100l and weigh around 95 to 97kgs. It floats me really well. I wouldn't want it to be any bigger. I think if you are only 85kg's the 100l would be way too big to use as a wave board.

Hi Brien,

Can you give us a bit more feedabck on the Evo 100 please? There's not many around. How does it go in big waves? Can it handle the take off or does it start skipping sideways under power? How's the upwind performance when the wind is light? If you're sailing it in gusty conditions, and the wind suddenly picks up a fair bit, does it still feel OK, or does it become unturnable?

I'm around 94 kg and my old Evo 92 is getting to its use by date, and I'm toying with the idea of replacing it with an 80 & 100. The 100 would replace my 97l Fish, but only if its light wind performance is as good.

Cheers, Jens

Jens,

I have riden it in up to about 3/4 mast waves. It handles it fine but I must say that I only have riden it in larger waves when the water surface has been pretty smooth. In those conditions it rides as well as any board of a comparible volume to rider weight. I don't tend to use it if the wind is consistantly over 20 knots but when it is gusty it handles the strong stuff just fine.

To sum it up I would say that the unique thing about the board is that it is a big board that has not been de-tuned to make it more bump and jump oriented. If you are 94 kg's I imagine it would ride for you how a 90 litre board would ride for an 84kg rider.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Brien,

Sounds pretty good then. If you sail it largely under 20 knots, its light wind performance must be up to the mark. Have you ever tried the old Starboard Fish 97? It's excellent at light wind stuff, and goes really well in flat slow waves. However, when you sail it back to back with the Evo 92 in faster, pitching waves it is noticeably slower to go back up the wave face. I guess it's not a fair contest: 44.7 cm tail vs 40.2 cm in the Evo. Interestingly, the Evo 100 is actually marginally narrower in the tail than the Evo 92 (39.5 vs 40.2 cm), so perhaps it will be as loose in the fast stuff?

What do you use when the wind gets >20 knots?

Cheers, Jens
