Spotted these pix in the photo section and can't believe no one has posted in the forums.
Awesome images, surely there's a story behind them Oceanpix!!
I.e Who's the hellman charging these monsters?
Love ya work ![]()
Hi Pointman,
I think the last piccie might be me grovelling out, and the one above could be Corey on a wave. There were a few large days at Margies this year where these photos could have been taken, but in today's heat that seems like years ago...
Cheers, jens
Think you are right Jens.
Watched happily from the carpark that day. Corey was charging and setting the standard. Very, very light wind and filled in late. Was disappointing from the wind side of things.
Got some good footage![]()
Its one of the locals who live in Margs - Simon Peters doing the aerials and actually milking the conditions. The raked bottom turn is Corey.
Jens,
You are correct (you went out not long after I got in) in that you survived without the rinse cycle. The chanel South of the middle of the bay is fairly safe with the odd close out on that day, that only happens when it is about 10ft plus and depending on the tide. Yep you do get some breaking in the middle but I'm talking about close outs from main's to the box.
Over the years there have been a few BIG days when getting out has its own fair share of chalenges and thrills.
Two things I dont have compared to the guys that charge like that are the skills and large cahoonas but I do enjoy the rush of a large Margies day now and again.
Now with age against me and not the greatest of fitness levels I don't push it that hard on big days just try smooth lines and stay out of trouble. As most people know gear gets eaten at that place and the walk of shame back from the river mouth is not a very nice one. Only had that twice so far (touch wood) with broken gear and the rip running strong.
Just remember the rip runs North and its hard to swim against (especially with broken gear drap) and so if you cant make the beach stay clear of the rocks and swim out to sea. I know this goes against peoples natural instinct to get in but go out and around the break in the middle as that will make you loose all you're gear on the rocks, then swimm to the North end of the beach past the river mouth and take the long walk of shame.
Remember the local fine system, cartons to be paid on the mez for any breakage or walks of shame.
One of the guys at Auswind mentioned there were some pics on seabreeze so I had to take a look. There were a few lenses at the point that day, so I am glad someone snapped the biggest aerial I have ever done at Margs. Pretty happy to make that one and was in the air for twice as long and twice as high as a regular 'lifter' air.
The landing was really sweet out in front of the wave.
Anyway you can tell that one is embedded in the memory.
Riding the 2011 Quad 82 and S-1 5.0.
The biggest airs are often possible on larger board in lighter wind with cleaner waves, and the new quad feels smaller to ride than it's 82L but still floats really nice. A magic board. Magic sail too.
Another massive day at Margs, they start to blend into one, but there are always the days that stand out.
Corey was charging some of the biggest sets of the day. But came unglued. I was sailing down a monster and Corey was laying at the bottom standing on his sail. I remember looking back after it got him and seeing his board bouncing down the wave and I thought 'Not Good".
His deck box ripped out. Separation...
I couldn't do anything to help him.
Then to my surprise, I saw his sail flip up in the air down near 'Jap Rocks' (named after some Japanese sailors who got reamed on them a few years back).
I thought 'couldn't be, not even Corey could manage to get going after that'.
But as I found out on the beach later, it was Peter Volwater trying to grab Coreys Rig.
Anyway, this is my first forum post so I have saved up the babble for one big bit of text haha.
Does anyone know who Oceanpix is because I wouldn't mind asking for a copy of that big aerial shot?
I have attached a shot from a few years back that was on my desktop.
Simon
I have been back working on site since those few big days at Margs. Just managed to get the photo's sorted before I flew out.
Simon, I have about 20 sequence shots of that aerial as well as heaps more. I also have some pretty good ones from Gnaraloo in 2009.
Pretty sure this is you too
Have a look at my images and send me a message.
looks like youv'e worked out who's who.![]()
From the second pic, if you assume the board is 2.3m long, then the height of the wave from the front is 7.5m which roughly equals 24ft.
pic no 3 is one of the best original pics ever posted on this site,,
there should be a separate photo section, where all time cream pics are promoted to a smaller worthier section....... otherwise they get lost with the other 20,000+ pics
Laurie ??????
like this golden oldie
Langy,
I reckon the pics you mentioned are about 8-9ft.
Saw Corey charging a solid 10fter as I was heading back out. He was hitting it right in the pocket and just loving life, pretty awesome to see.
He was in the carpark later commenting on every set and saying "Look, thats got to be 8 ft"
Was some 11fters comming through but as often happens they were big and fat.
My reasoning is that mast high is about 6ft, mast and a half 8-9ft, some waves are steeper making them look bigger etc, it's basically a mater of personal opinion and when you are on the wave it looks bigger than it does from the beach.
Dont forget the after stories, the more beers you have the bigger the waves gets and the harder you either chargered or soiled your wetty. Either way its all good to be out there.
Apart from calling it fken big
top 4 photos
If your calling one of the biggest days ever,
Surely one of the largest SWELLS for the season , you would have to call it 12 to 15 plus feet ?
Funny a couple of crew would call it solid 6 to 8 foot ? i automatically add 6 and begin to **** and laugh as i find it impossible to call it that small.
Tellem there fken dreaming ![]()
I love to dream, dreams are free.
Just because its "one of the largest SWELLS for the season" does not make it one of the biggest days ever.
Yes it was freeking big out there and to see the guys charging waves like that fuel my dreams and I will be happy, no more than happy to keep dreaming.
Hi Langey,
I think it was just a standard big day at Margs. I keep a windsurfing diary spreadsheet on my computer, and I have 5 big day entries for Margs this summer, and I know I didn't get them all. I called it mast high, with big ones at mast and a half, and occasionally a little more. It was a funny day because at 1st the wind was very light, and then it built to the point where I couldn't do a bottom turn on my 92l board with a tight 5.2. When I had to let go of my clew hand on a mast and half high reo, I knew it was time to get the little one! That was very worthwhile because the wind stayed in till dark, and we had an epic late session with hardly any crew out.
Cheers, Jens
Hi Jens
yes it has gone tropical down here too. No good days for weeks now.
We normally only have a few nights over summer when you can wear a t-shirt at night, but it's every night at the moment
