Is there anything wrong with having a wave sailing forum?

nothing wrong with seperating the wavesailing content greenster, its just that it would be better to seperate it by using the categories filter instead of pulling it out into another forum.

That way the community stays together, if you want to filter it in (or out) you can, if you are happy to look at all the threads you can.

Some people might night bother to check the seperate forums and therefore miss out on a whole range of topics which may interest them if they'd had a chance to read them in the first place.

I read every topic in this forum but hardly any in general windsurfing.

Separation of the forums has been really good as a whole lot of new users have signed up and can ask the same old boring questions in the general forum and for them it's the first time they've had that topic.

See, the dumb thing about this discussion, is that you won't actually lose it. In fact, it'll definitely stay, just be subtly different.

Let me see if I can explain this in another way...

Currently we have subforums( like 'Wave Sailing') and categories (like 'Technique'). The categories are not used consistently, and aren't really that useful at the moment.

The proposal on the table is to replace the functionality that subforums currently give us by using the categories. So, you'll have a 'Wave Sailing' category that you can look at if you so choose. In exactly the same way as you currently have a 'Wave Sailing' forum.

The difference will be that instead of having lots of little buckets of posts, all kept separate, we'll have one big bucket, but with an optional way to categorise the posts so that they can still appear to be in their own buckets for the people who like to see them that way.

The reason to make the change is that in separating everyone out into little subforums we're losing the big forum feeling, the banter, and sharing of ideas between disciplines, regions, and states.

After the change, you can still look 'ONLY' at the 'Wave Sailing' category if you wish, but others will not be forced to specifically look in each subforum to see what is happening as is currently the case.

I really can't see any negative impact on anyone from this change.. We're not losing anything that we have at the moment, instead we're gaining some extra functionality which will make the forum more vibrant and easier to use.

But the categories don't work with Active Topics
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/active.asp . And Active Topics
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/active.asp is the only way to view Seabreeze (imho).

I agree with your sentiments on Active topics.

I think Active Topics should have access to the categories as well.

Of course, using Active topics justifies the need for less forums. Because by using it you are viewing all the forums anyway, so they might as well be under fewer headings.

True, and that's something that's been mentioned in the main post on this topic (over in the general forum). I believe that Laurie has plans to fix that soon..

Really the only reason we need Active Topics
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/active.asp (the only reason I started using it anyway..) is because everything is so segregated at the moment! If it was all in one place, and sorted (like it is now) by 'last added' it would effectively be the same as Active Topics
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/active.asp anyway.

Active Topics rock if you're a regular. Once you're away for a few days, gets a bit hairy. Active Topics by Category are very much needed. So much to do...

Na wavesailors are a different breed to the rest of the windsurfing fraternity, we arn't always obsessed with being able to plane in 12 knots, don't care if we just sailed .09 of a knot faster than yesterday, we all know what the next board we are going to buy will be, usually before it's even made and we already know that wearing your boardies outside your wetsuit is gay so don't need to discus it over and over. most wavesailors have many years on the water and get a bit bored with the same old questions and answers.
This is somewhere we belong with our brothers, so 100% stay...
