This is how its been in the past Damian, register on the day usually around 1pm at the top car park Jetty Rd. race usually starts around 3pm-4pm depending on wind strength and its a beach start and a race straight out to the Faulkner beacon and back sometimes the course is adjusted if the wind is more sw than s . Presentation and bbq and a beer afterwards, simple!
Also I'm pretty sure you will need to be a member of WV and wear a pfd.

Check out SHQ for details. In the meantime.
25 entrants.
Best ever race conditions. 15-18knots SSW.
Not too strong and not too light - just right!
Beam reach pretty much out and back.
New race record Ian Fox 15 minutes or so.
2nd Arthur Brett
3rd Adrian Bonomi
Both also under previous race record of 18 minutes.
See ya next year!
Not trying to take anything away from Foxy, awesome, awesome effort to win again!!!!!! and well done Arthur and Ado, but the record time is a crock.....the race is a different distance / course every year, sometimes going nowhere near the Beacon. Yes, sure you can say that was the fastest time ever but unless the course is consistent you can't really call it a record can you????.
Spewing I missed it, next year don't hold it the same week as the Detroit Motor show![]()

Or the Lancelin Ocean Classic! Just got back from my first time and am keen for the next local downwinder.
Anyone know what the next one is?

Sure mate I take your point but the mark wasn't that far from the Beacon, maybe another minute of sailing if that. Say two minutes all up including gybing. I was tracking straight to the Beacon in fact and 100m upwind from Ian and Arthur. Ian and maybe even Arthur would have missed the mark if it was where the race briefing stated and they would have tacked an gybed once more than I did. I thought tactically I would have a chance as they were only about 100m ahead and downwind. When it turned out the boat/mark was 500 downwind of the Beacon and closer than expected they had a huge advantage over me and gained 200m instantly because of where I was tracking - the Beacon! Ian took off after that and I managed to claw back about 200m on Arthur but couldn't catch him by race end.
Interesting race!
See ya soon. ![]()
They ever thought of mixing the kite version with the windsurf version? Is this inviting Chaos??
Curious ![]()
Bang the Corner
to sail all the way to or beyond the lateral extent of the racecourse (where the extended laylines from the weather mark and leeward mark cross) in search of a (usually mythical) strategic advantage. Banging the corner eliminates any advantages possible from wind shifts; lifts are no help to you and headers help every other boat but yours. Also called “going to Cornersville,” “Rightsville,” or “Leftsville,” where the population is usually 1.
Ahh yeah Retzy. Ian agreed with me over a sausage and a beer and he was relieved to find the mark where it was. He knew where I was sailing and knew the risk he took sailing so low.
I guess we're both wrong and the sailing mythology is right and well, you were there so oh well, you should know! ![]()

same every year! Push as high upwind as you can until you can see where the bouy is, then rush off downwind! Usually makes for an interesting gybe when we all end up there at once
I've done the exact same thing as you a few times ![]()
You feel the pain mate.
One year they'll put the boat 500m upwind and 2km inshore of the Beacon and we'll all be stuffed because we'll all sail past it!
Really, great race and thanks to SHQ. It takes a fair amount of stuffing around even for such a simple event.

I would imagine. It's a shame we really only have one a year, it's such a long wait and a great event. Thinking about it (to be honest somebody else suggested it), would it be practical to have more than one race on that particular day. eg. a couple of races before the final Breakwater to Beacon race? It's all over too quickly and with such a lot of effort going into one day why not make the most of it? Just a thought.
Here is a short clip capturing the race via drone. We will get some event pictures up for you soon. Thanks to everyone who raced - was great conditions for it!
Great imagery SHQ!
It was clear Arthur Brett had a clean start but seeing it like that really puts things in perspective.
